Everyone knows the pleasure and joy they receive when they are fortunate enough to share a meal with people they love and enjoy.  Conversely, most of us have also suffered through a tension filled meal and experienced the dissatisfaction and indigestion that can be a result.  But how is it possible  we walk away from the table after a relaxing meal feeling satisfied and step away from a stress filled meal with a stomach ache?  The answer lies in our age old survival instincts.

Our body’s autonomic nervous system has two divisions- the parasympathetic nervous system and the sympathetic nervous system.  The parasympathetic system is responsible for digestion, fuel storage, rest and recuperation, and circulation to non-vital organs.  This is the system in control when you are relaxed and have time to enjoy your life.

The sympathetic nervous system, on the other hand,  is responsible for your flight or fight response.  When your body perceives a danger or is stressed, your sympathetic nervous system diverts blood and energy away from your non essential organs and speeds up your heart rate.  It also increases adrenaline and blood pressure.  While your body is in a heighten state of arousal, it is unable to focus on non- essential tasks like dig…

Making Peace with Today’s Troublesome Political Climate

Staying on top of politics is a new priority in many people’s lives. You’re likely getting more news alerts, reading more news articles, and watching more news clips than ever before. And though it’s true that today’s political climate is troubling for all people, this trend in paying attention to current events is really nothing new for the rest of the world. While many Americans may be just now starting to care deeply about politics, in some places, especially third-world countries, it has been the forefront for centuries.

How do the people who live in these places deal with all this strife? They know that politics can’t drive one’s life.

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t care about what’s going on or refuse to be informed, but the key to keeping yourself going in times like these is to limit your emotional involvement with day-to-day political happenings. If you find yourself reading or watching the news and notice an emotional reaction in yourself or your family is becoming divided by differing opinions, the best approach is to respond mindfully.

Here are three coping strategies that you can use when it all just seems like too much.

Not long ago, Zika virus was dominating headlines. A new infection was hardly ever heard about before then, yet is now affecting hundreds of thousands of people in Latin America, causing disfiguration and microcephalia in new-born babies. Microcephalia is caused by severe delayed and abnormal development of the brain, resulting in the range of intellectual disability, dwarfism, poor motor functions and speech. With no cure or even preventive vaccination available, many women in the most affected regions were reportedly considering postponing any planned pregnancies.

The virus was actually discovered back in 1947 in Zika forest in Uganda (and this is where its name comes from). The pathogen is related to better known viruses causing dengue and yellow fever. The disease is spread predominantly by one type of mosquito and was a rare occurrence until the epidemics of 2015–2016, when in Brazil alone well over 100,000 cases were reported. New Brain Study Suggests Link Between Autism, Pain Sensitivity

New research by a UT Dallas neuroscientist at the Center for BrainHealth has established a link between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and pain sensitivity.

The study, led by Dr. Xiaosi Gu, outlines alternations in pain perception faced by people on the autism spectrum and how those changes can affect them in social functions.

“This provides some of the first evidence that links pain perception to social function in ASD. Most experiments on ASD focus either on the social dysfunction aspects or the sensory dysfunction aspects. But very few studies have looked at them both,” said Gu, assistant professor in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences.

Published in the European Journal of Neuroscience, the study focused on a very specific aspect of sensory processing — pain perception, with a goal of determining what happens in the br…
