The Practice of Meticulous Attention

By Leo Babauta

All day long, we’re only giving anything a fraction of our attention.

We’re distracted, multitasking, opening multiple browser tabs, checking phone messages and social media.

I’m a part of this like anyone else. I’m not immune, and I don’t judge.

This fractured, scattered, partial attention has many deleterious effects on our lives:

  • We never really pour ourselves into any task, fully giving ourselves to the task. We can’t accomplish a craftsman-like devotion to our work.
  • Our minds become frazzled, anxious, stressed from the constant rushing and switching. We never achieve any kind of peace and presence.
  • By not giving our full attention to the person in front of us, we are shutting out the possibility of full connection. Of intimacy and trust.
  • When we read and watch videos and listen to songs in a fractured, partial-attent…

How to Make Tortillas (2 Ingredients, Oil-Free!)

Our love for Mexican food is real, and it was only a matter of time before we started making our own corn tortillas from scratch since store-bought can be so hit-and-miss.

After much experimentation (and consulting friends for tips) we settled on this easy recipe that’s not only easy to make but also easy to remember!

Our rough formula is a 1:1 masa harina to water ratio, plus a pinch of salt.

The Joy of Bone-Exhausting Work

Source https://zenhabits.net/bone-weary/

By Leo Babauta

Over the last week, my family and I moved to a new home, away from San Diego and into the suburbs east of Los Angeles (to be near family). As usual, we did all the moving ourselves, and it was exhausting!

We don’t have a crazy amount of stuff for a family our size, but all of our furniture seems to be made of incredibly dense, heavy wood. Even with three strong sons helping me move, we were all wiped out after one day of loading a huge moving truck, and another day of unloading.

Sore and tired, to the bone.

I’m still recovering. But I have to say, this deeply tiring physical work was a time of joy for me. It was stressful, my body suffered, it wasn’t easy or comfortable. But some of the best experiences can have all of that, mixed in with satisfaction, appreciation, and joy.

You pour yourself into something, and are completely present. It demands all of your focus, and you ar…

What’s the story on Vitamin D

Source https://www.foodpolitics.com/2020/05/whats-the-story-on-vitamin-d/

Yesterday, I wrote about current research suggesting that higher levels of blood Vitamin D [actually, 25-hydroxycholecalciferol, or 25(OH)D] help to protect against Covid-19.

To understand concerns that this evidence may not be totally convincing, it’s useful to know the basics about this “vitamin,” which I put in quotes because its active form is a hormone that helps govern calcium balance.  Here’s how it works.

  • Sunlight acts on a form of cholesterol in skin (7-dehydrocholesterol) to covert it to cholecalciferol, the chemical name for vitamin D3.
  • Vitamin D3 goes to the liver where an enzyme converts it to 25 (OH)D.
  • 25(OH)D goes to the kidney where an enzyme converts it to 1,25-dihyd…

Tone deaf food company ads of the week: Are these for real? So it seems.

Source https://www.foodpolitics.com/2020/05/tone-deaf-food-company-ads-of-the-week-are-these-for-real/

Here are two ads sent to me last week.  Both have now been taken down.

This one, according to reader Tony Vassallo (thanks!) comes from the Walmart Supercenter Store 908 at 8101 South John Young Parkway, Orlando FL.  I’m not the only one who thought this was in bad taste (sorry).   After a Twitter storm, Pepsi took it down.

But what about this one?

I looked up Westbrook Mall: Calgary, Alberta.  This too caused an uproar.  …

The clots  can be life-threatening, and the frequency at which they are showing up in COVID-19 patients is cause for alarm, experts say.
