Why I Thanked My Ex and Now Appreciate the Heartbreak

“How thankful I am today, to know that all my past struggles were necessary for me to be where I am now.” ~Unknown

I met my ex-boyfriend, let’s call him Derek, through work. We were introduced through mutual co-workers, and then we hit it off and began dating.

We had a connection right away, partly based on physical attraction, but also we laughed a lot together, and I felt cared for by him.

We lived in different cities at the time, but would see each other every other weekend. We dated this way for a year and then talked about moving in together.

We decided that I would uproot myself and move to his city because he had a steady, stable career and could not leave it. I had extreme anxiety about moving away from my friends and my life, but for several reasons, the fear of being alone being the major one, I decided to move.

Living together was tough at first. We had different ways of doing things, but we figured it out—or so I thought.

A few months in, I became severely depressed and my past anxiety came back in full force. I’d gained twenty pounds in four months due to extreme <a href="http://tinybuddha.com/blog/avoid-pain-emotional-eati…

Weekend: Good Eats

Source http://www.fannetasticfood.com/weekend-good-eats/

Hey friends! This weekend had one major theme: good food! We did a lot of eating out and I didn’t hate it. 🙂

On Friday night, I had a girl’s dinner with my college friends Kathleen and Sarah! We hit up Ethiopic, an Ethiopian place on H street in DC, and shared the vegetarian sampler platter. Delicious!

Love these ladies!

The cost of poor food safety practices: $36 million in two years

Source http://www.foodpolitics.com/2017/05/the-cost-of-poor-food-safety-practices-36-million-in-two-years/

Food Safety News, my go-to source for information about current and past episodes of foodborne illness, reports the price of insufficient corporate diligence: $36 million in recalls by Dole Foods.

Dole, a privately-held company is going public, which means it has to file lots of financial documents with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).  For the past couple of years, these show:

2015: $10.8 million to recall bagged salads in which a sample tested positive for Salmonella.

2016: $25.5 million for a four-month shutdown of a salad processing plant found to be contaminated with Listeria, and manage a recall. Listeria at the plant was linked to four deaths and 33 cases of illness in the U.S. and Canada.  The company continued to ship salads from the facility after swab tests were positive for Listeria.

The SEC requires companies to list potential risks.  In its SEC filing, Dole said:

3 Ways to Deal with a Self-Absorbed Loved One

Source http://www.sonima.com/meditation/mindful-living/self-absorbed/

Your phone rings. Up pops the name of your friend from college. You haven’t talked to her in weeks, or maybe months. So why are you hesitant to pick up? It’s likely because you know that this particular person only wants to talk about herself, the issues coming up for her at work, her relationship drama, all while seeking your advice and support without any form of reciprocity or care as to your own well-being.

My fiancé is a super compassionate, deep listener, and as a result I’ve seen a a number of people in her life leap at the opportunity to divulge all the aches and pains of their existence to her, often leaving her drained. These are very well-intentioned individuals, who are nothing but lovely for the most part, but they lack the self-awareness to instigate a give-and-take exchange. Every interaction is about them and their suffering, and thus, the relationship becomes one-sided. Having seen this dynamic take place in her and other relationships, I have been contemplating what one could do and came up with three possible roads to follow.

1) Keep an Open Mind

Yes, the last two dozen times you hung out with this person, they were pretty self-obsessed, but that actually does not mean that this time is going to be the same. When once asked about the very complex Buddhist notion of karma, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche responded quite simply, “Everything is predetermined…until…

Weekend reading: What’s the Matter with Meat?

Katy Keiffer. What’s the Matter with Meat?  Reaktion Books, 2017.

Katy has a terrific show on Heritage Radio that I’ve been on several times and I was happy to do a blurb for her new book:

Katy Keiffer has produced a thorough and well researched analysis of everything that’s wrong with industrial meat production.  Her book is worth reading for its focus on animal welfare, antibiotic resistance, and worker safety, but even more for its critique of the effects of animal feed production on international trade and land grabs.  This book is for everyone who cares about how meat-eating affects our planet.

FitBits | If you don't take part you're gonna fail - Anthony Joshua - Tess Agnew fitness blogger

Wise words spoken by World Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua, moments after he knocked Wladimir Klitschko out in the 11th round.

90,000 people packed into Wembley Stadium to see this £30million pound title fight, with millions more watching online, in pubs, and on the live Instagram streams of people who’d paid to view it.

19 fights. 19 wins, all by stoppage. An opponent has still never made it past the 11th round. Incredible.

Joshua was knocked down himself in the sixth round but he got back up, mustered everything he had to finish the job, and when mic was handed to him as 90,000 people screamed his name, what did he say?

Rugged Maniac 2017 – Charleston

Source http://www.livelifeactive.com/2017/04/28/rugged-maniac-2017-charleston/

Hey guys!  Guess what I did again??? I did the Rugged Maniac Charleston again this year!  Mud runs are seriously one of my favorite things in the world to do and the Rugged Maniac always puts on a good race and such a fun atmosphere. It was at Boone Hall Plantation again this year and they have such a great spot for this type of event.

Remember my post last year when I did the Rugged Maniac Charleston and totally jacked up my body on the ninja warrior-like wall and slide and got the worst sunburn ever? yeaaaaa…. that race left me completely bruised and scraped up last year and to be honest I was a bit nervous to do it again.  I knew I had to face that damn wall again and this year I had to show that wall who’s boss.

I also didn’t make the same dumb mistakes as I did last year which were: wear shorts and plan my move into my new house for right after the race.  (What was I thinking?! Never again!)

Last year I just ran it with my boyfriend, but this year I wanted a crew.  We ended up having a group of 8 that we ran with and it was SO much more fun with a group.

Here’s some of my Rugged Sqad before the race.

Technology Coloring Page from Tiny Buddha’s Gratitude Journal

Source http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/tinybuddha/~3/v2PyKsKgekY/

Hi everyone! This is my third week sharing coloring pages from the soon-to-be-released Tiny Buddha’s Gratitude Journal (available for pre-order now.) Previously, I shared the nature coloring page and the vacation coloring page.

This one’s a no-brainer for me. Though I could live without it (did it for over twenty-five years!), I’m most grateful for my iPhone—which I use most frequently to manage Tiny Buddha’s social media pages and my inboxes on the go, read eBooks, track my steps, and listen to music and guided meditations.

If you had told me in high school I’d one day own one device that would replace my computer, my alarm clock, my camera, my pedometer, and everything on my book shelf, I would have asked what you were on (and if you had any left).

Though I was a late iPhone adopter, using a flip phone for an embarrassingly long amount of time, I’ve had one for quite a while now, yet it still blows my mind how much it simplifies my life.
