I did a blurb for this book but only just got my copy. I don’t usually blurb books about cooking, but Martha is a friend and spiralized vegetables are more fun than anything. Here’s what I wrote, all true.

“Help! I can’t lose weight even though I eat real food. Most of my meals include lean protein and lots of veggies. The other foods I eat are fruits, low fat dairy, nuts, beans, and whole grains. I rarely eat sugar or junk food. Why can’t I lose weight?”
That’s an email from a reader of this website, and I’ve received countless ones like it. Many clients make a similar statement at the beginning of our working relationship about eating right but not being able to lose weight. The first course of action I tell them to take: “For the next week record everything you eat and drink; nibbles, tastes, and sips count. You don’t need to record the calories, just what you eat. For example: chicken breast, mixed veggies, a handful of M&Ms, and a cup of green tea, or whatever the case may be. Record every item.”
A week of this practice leaves many flabbergasted. Turns out they in fact do not eat the way they proclaimed in the initial email/conversation. A sleeve of Girl Scout cookies snuck its way onto the list, several slices of pizza, daily trips to the candy bowl at work, a bottle of wine on Friday night followed by a pint of ice cream, and the occasional 20-ounce soda appeared on the food log.

Hey guys! Let’s kick off the weekend with some fun updates and faves, shall we? 🙂
1) We are adopting a puppy!!!!!! Isn’t she cute? The ears!! <3

Matt and I have been talking about getting a dog for quite awhile now, and when we were in Asheville last weekend, my best friend Jenny and I were in a café getting coffee when the cutest puppy came in. We were saying hi to her when the woman with the dog said that they were actually fostering her via the local shelter, and that she was up for adoption! Gah!
After coming home and having a lot of conversations and discussions about logistics with Matt, we’ve decided it was fate and we should go for it. We put in an application for her with the shelter and she is officially ours! Matt is going to be back down in NC in 2 weeks attending his brother’s PhD graduation, so he’s going to go do the paperwork and pick her up while he’s down there…

I was stressed, overworked, and in what you would probably call a rut. Fatigued and struggling to get things done, I initially thought that all I needed was a break. But I soon realized that that wasn’t the case.
What had happened was that being tired had driven me to get stuck in a messy cycle of negative thoughts, and every time I tried to untangle little problems, things seemed to get worse.
Everyone around me was telling me to take a rest. But intuitively, I didn’t think a rest was what I needed. I’m generally a confident guy, but if you spend enough time in your own head, doubt will always begin to plant its seeds.

Then welcome to the world of multipotentialite, a word I first encountered when I heard a TEDX talk by Emilie Wapnick. In her talk, Emilie talks about the challenges multipotentialites face and how to embrace them.

Every woman has her own set of upper-body goals. Some want toned arms and shoulders, while others desire Instagram-worthy biceps. Others just want to look great in a cold shoulder dress. And every mom just needs the arm strength to lift kids into and out of car seats over and over again.

Hey friends! I made a yummy lunch earlier this week on a day I was working from home that I wanted to share, in case you need some lunchtime inspiration!

To make this masterpiece yourself, grab a wrap (these are black rice wraps, but any wrap will work), then layer on hummus, chicken, sauerkraut, dijon mustard, and greens. Sounds gross, tastes awesome – you guys know that’s how I roll.
