The best part? It’s just four moves with no equipment, making it the perfect routine to do at home, on the go, or at the gym. “When you’re ready to get started with the workout, just remember to find a pace that suits you and your body!” Istines says.

I always tell people that Ayurveda is a human, time-tested form of medicine. It doesn’t need any animal experimentation to validate its effectiveness. However, certain Ayurvedic practices have been scientifically proven to offer many health benefits. Among these research-supported practices is tongue scraping, which has been around for thousands of years. We know that Ayurveda has a longer oral tradition, but the first textual reference to this practice (including a breakdown of severals steps for self-care) is in the book Charaka Samhita, which is believed to have been written about 3,000 years ago.

Why have humans been tongue scraping for so long? In Ayurveda, we say that life is what you experience. What you experience is based on the sense organs (ears, skin, eyes, tongue, and nose), which engage in sense objects (sound, touch, sight, taste, and smell). Each of these give you different impressions or feelings of pleasure or pain. These impressions are registered by your mind, and then the mind conveys them to the soul. This is how experience is seen in Ayurveda. The Power of Staying Put When You Feel Like Running Away

Last year my family and I relocated overseas from Australia to Singapore, which meant new jobs, new schools, new relationships—an entirely new way of living.

My husband was busy with his work, and I had two wide-eyed children looking up at mummy for direction. A part of me was exited for the challenge, but another part of me, of equal measure, was feeling overwhelmed by the prospect and struggling to let my feelings go. I also knew that the only way out of this emotional prison was through.

This chapter in my own zigzag journey has reconfirmed to me that we never have everything figured out. You think you’ve got it (eureka!), then life throws a curve ball and you take a temporary step backward. And that’s okay.

I would say I’m more of an introvert; give me a good book and I’m happy. Reflecting, writing, and analyzing come naturally to me, whereas extroverting is more of an acquired skill. So the hardest part of our new life, for me, was the social aspect.

  1. Start a “certification” file: Make sure you keep copies of your certification, your attendance records, and a list of the completed classes and grades for each class. This is important information to have on hand when applying for teaching opportunities.
  1. Get certified in CPR: It may not be required, but becoming certified in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) shows that you have taken one extra step beyond your yoga teaching certification to be a professional part of the yoga community. You know what you’re supposed to do. You’re supposed to spread a tablespoon of peanut butter on some apple slices. The reality: you wind up spooning it—and almost half of the jar—directly into your mouth. Then you wash it down with a bag of trail mix.

You’re supposed to eat a serving of hummus with some veggies. But now the whole tub of Sabra is empty, and after the veggies disappeared so quickly, you broke out a bag of tortilla chips to help finish it off. [After all, it’s a snack, right?]
