Why You Gain Weight on Diets (And The Simple Fix That Can Keep Off the Pounds)

Source http://www.bornfitness.com/why-you-gain-weight-on-diets/

Why is it that most diets cause weight loss followed by a period where you gain weight? It’s a mystery that leads most people to believe that the entire diet industry is a hoax.

While there are many (many) bad diets that can easily be blamed for why you gain weight, most diets are designed to work. We know this because people lose weight and can keep it off. So what, then, causes the big divide between those that keep pounds off and those that gain them back?

The answer is something known as “set point theory,” which probably means nothing to you. But if you’ve ever found that you gain weight when you diet, it’s likely the missing piece of the puzzle that can change everything.

Long-Term Weight Loss Is Real (But You’ve Been Fooled)

I’ve been journaling–somewhat consistently–since second grade. While unpacking boxes after a recent move, I found an entry from 1991 (I was 9) that read: “I don’t have to always fit into big pants.”

Archaeological records show ancient humans sometimes ate each other. A new study suggests that hunting and eating other humans cost too much effort to be a regular thing. So why’d they do it?

Positive Peer Pressure: How to Leverage Your Squad to Get In Shape

Source https://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/positive-peer-pressure-to-get-in-shape/

“Just beat Level 8!”

“UGH, NOOOOOOOOOOO!”

A few months back, a group of my friends and I engaged in a digital arms race. You see, I made the horribly amazing mistake of downloading the brutally difficult and perfectly balanced mobile game, “Geometry Dash.”

Your goal is to get your automatically moving square to hop over increasingly challenging triangles and boxes by touching the screen. I know, squares hopping over triangles sounds like thrilling game mechanics.

No joke, I’m warning you to NOT download this game:

You’ll swear words you’ve never said before, you’ll pull your hair out, and then you’ll say “one more try.” And you will do this thousands of times When you finally beat a level, the sheer joy you’ll experience is unparalleled, only to repeat the process on the next level.

Although the game took over my life for a few weeks, it taught me a valuable lesson about the positive benefits of peer pressure. Today, you’re going to learn how to enter your own arms race with your friends and use peer pressure to positively level up your life.

Stand up for your health – it’s time to move

Source http://www.thefitbits.com/2017/03/stand-up-for-your-health-its-time-to.html

I stood at my desk all day for the first time a couple of weeks ago and despite my body protesting initially, by the end of the day I felt awesome.

My legs were tired, my feet were surprisingly very achey, and I had that satisfying rumble in my belly that I get from working out first thing.

My flexible sit-stand desk arrived this month and I’m not gonna lie, it’s pretty brilliant.

After years of faffing about with boxes for makeshift standing desks, I’ve finally got my own proper set up thanks to Varidesk!

When you have a fitness or performance goal, it’s best to have clear intentions and quality support. But, how do you know if it’s time to get a coach, or try a new program? Here are some basic guidelines and suggestions

You may want to hire a fitness coach if….

  • You haven’t reached a goal you’ve been trying to reach for a while. You’ve been working towards it on your own, but still don’t feel as successful as you’d like to
  • You feel stagnant or like your overall fitness is actually declining. Maybe you’ve seen your progress come to a halt, or your numbers are dropping and you’re wondering why

How to Use Silence to Help Your Hurting Friend

Source http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/tinybuddha/~3/xSDbMurYdGI/

“Sitting silently beside a friend who is hurting may be the best gift we can give.” ~Unknown

There’s a time for words and a time for silence. Thankfully, when I went through one of the darkest periods of my life, I had friends who knew what time it was.

When things go well, your friends don’t usually need to show up in silence. But everything changes when you go through a season of intense pain and disappointment. I know this from firsthand experience.

My life took a drastic turn for the worse when the first ride of the season on our motorcycle ended abruptly. A driver who should have stopped and waited turned left onto the highway, right in front of us. In that moment, we met a world of hurt.

After the initial crash, which I barely survived, I experienced incredible peace and gratitude. I was in a great deal of pain, but I found myself grateful for my family, the excellent care I was receiving, and hope for a better future.

In the early days of repair and recovery, I appreciated the friends and family who came to visit. I enjoyed hearing their news and talking about my journey. I read, with gratitude, the cards that were filled with words of encouragement and love.

Broth-Loving Hipsters Are Pushing Up The Price Of Bones

Source http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2017/04/04/522190305/broth-loving-hipsters-are-pushing-up-the-price-of-bones?utm_medium=RSS&utm_campaign=thesalt

Bone broth has become so popular these days that the bones used to make it are getting harder — and more expensive — for broth retailers to source.

With bone broth mania sweeping parts of the U.S. (we see you, LA), cheap bones are harder to come by. Some broth makers are moving away from the standard beef and chicken to new bones — like alpaca.
