If I eat this it’ll help me lose fat, and that will make me like myself more.
If I eat this it’ll cause me to gain fat, and that will make me hate myself more.
I have to do this workout so I can lose fat, fix my flaws, and finally like my body.
For a four-year period that’s how I analyzed everything I ate and drank; I even scrutinized the calories in a stick of gum. My workouts were about one thing: building a better body and fixing my trouble areas, because I didn’t like how I looked. So I’d work out as hard, for as long, as I possibly could. The workouts left me exhausted but this meant, at the time, that I did my best and had a great workout. The more fatigue I accumulated, the better the workout.
Disliking my physical features wasn’t confined to this period (roughly 19-23 years old). Beginning in grade school and going through high school I was made fun of for having a large nose. From “That thing is so ugly!” to “Nia, move, you’re blocking the sun!” the comments flowed from classmates. Then in high school I was also made fun of for having a big butt because, apparently, I had a big butt before big butts …

Hi guys! It’s been a dreary week over here in DC – what’s with all the rain and clouds?! Oh well – at least it makes yoga even cozier, right? 🙂

I kicked off my workweek downtown at my co-working space on Monday and decided to treat myself to a lunchtime yoga class via ClassPass (<- affiliate link for $30 off). It was just what I needed – felt really good to slow down and stretch out!
As for yesterday, Matt and I got in a quick morning run date! I wanted to go to my track workout group but I’m still getting over a cold and wanted to give myself one more day to sleep in a bit and keep things lower key. So instead Matt and I headed out for a couple casual miles around the neighborhood before he left for work. It actually ended up being a nice morning – the sun even came out briefly to join us! We did a really hilly route – didn’t feel easy but it was nice to get some fresh air and the company was excellent, of course. 🙂

I’m no stranger to early morning bootcamp – after all, it’s how I started my fitness journey, five years ago. What started as a last-ditch attempt to lose weight (for no real reason other than I just wanted to look thinner), soon turned into a full on love affair with morning workouts.
I loved the group atmosphere, the fact that I didn’t have to think about what I was doing and just do what I was told, and of course, the results. I got fit pretty quickly and started to actually feel good about myself, all the while forgetting the original reason of starting: to look slimmer and achieve that ‘perfect’ body.
Somewhere along the way, fitness became fun, and it didn’t matter what I looked like any more.

OK, let me start by firstly apologising to any male readers, and also any females who might think this is a massive overshare, but I’ve been doing this for 20 years and to be quite frank, the novelty has most definitely worn off.
Periods. Nine reasons to hate them. Feel free to add your own in the comments if I’ve missed any – we’re all girls here. Unless you’re a boy. In which case… I hate you right now.

“There is nothing else than now. There is neither yesterday, certainly, nor is there any tomorrow. How old must you be before you know that?” ~ Ernest Hemingway
It was a Wednesday afternoon, just like any other. I’d spent the last three hours bent over my laptop at a coffee shop, trying to nail down the revisions to a research report that was already three days late.
I’d been distracted all afternoon, checking my e-mail every five minutes for news about a proposal I’d submitted a few weeks earlier. When I’d found nothing to satisfy me in my inbox, I’d stumble over to Facebook, paging through memes about the world’s impending doom that seemed custom designed to me to make me feel as gloomy as possible.
Finally I called it quits and drove home in a funk. I walked into the kitchen, where my wife Lisa was cutting vegetables for dinner. She looked up when I walked in. “How are you doing?” she asked, reading my face.
I thought about that for a moment. I knew I had a happy life. There were a million things to be thankful for: a supportive relationship, fantastic kids, good health, and the fortune to live in a beautiful corner of a free country.
But I didn’t feel a…

The two agencies have just issued advice to pregnant women about eating fish.
Fatty fish have long-chain omega-3 fatty acids which are good for health.
But some have methylmercury, which is toxic to the developing fetus.
And all have PCBs or other organic compounds that are unlikely to promote health.
The advice? Eat 2 to 3 servings of lower-mercury fish per week for a total of 8-12 ounces
That’s fine, but which fish are low in methylmercury?
For this, the agencies have created an <a href="http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkPTIwMTcwMTE4LjY4ODgwMjAxJm1lc3NhZ2VpZD1NREItUFJELUJVTC0yMDE3MDExOC42ODg4MDIwMSZkYXRhYmFzZWlkPTEwMDEmc2VyaWFsPTE3MzgxMjUxJmVtYWlsaWQ9bWFyaW9uLm5lc3RsZUBueXUuZWR1JnVzZXJpZD1tYXJpb24ubmVzdGxlQG55dS5lZHUmZmw9JmV4dHJhPU11bHRpdmFyaWF0ZUlkPSYmJg==&&&101&&&http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodborneIllnessContaminants/Metals/ucm393070.htm?source=govdelivery&u…

Today’s been a binge of all my favourite things: running, cycling, eating and now, writing. Some of which were very hard, others easy (foooooood), and all of them soon to be followed by sleeping, as we have a 2hr10 long run with the RunBrighton crew tomorrow. #prayfortess.
It kicked off with a freezing cold and very difficult parkrun, where I tried to keep up with the 27min pacer and failed miserably. The midweek runs on the marathon plan were easy pace this week but with some travelling for work meetings and my body being quite tired, I chose to go to yoga, the gym and to Zumba instead, for a bit of chill time and fun to pick me up.

Hey friends – I’m back to share part 2 of our weekend adventures in the mountains of Virginia. 🙂 If you missed yesterday’s post, read that first: Shenandoah Weekend Recap Part 1.
When I last left off it was Saturday morning and Matt and I were enjoying a late breakfast at our cabin. After we ate, we got suited up for a hike, said farewell to our new friend Boots, and headed out the door!

We swung by a café in the town of Luray for lattes to go and then headed on to Shenandoah National Park, which was a short 20-ish minute drive. It was nice being so close – usually we stay a bit farther away!
