How Tim Walked His Way to a 50-Pound Weight Loss. Wait. WHAT!?

“Holy crap! Seriously!?”

It was 1 AM, and I was sitting, bleary-eyed at my computer in a hotel room in Barcelona. Like many people, instead of sleeping I had been messing around on Facebook (oops!) and happened across a thread with a Nerd Fitness reader who said the following:

“Nutrition is 90% of the battle, right? Well I’ve seen that in action over the last few months. I was unable to continue workouts due to a health issue and have had to rely COMPLETELY on walking and nutrition to find results. I think the pictures speak for themselves.

I am completely sold on the principles of the Nerd Fitness Academy. Thank you, Steve Kamb for founding NFA!

I am not done, I have only begun, but now that I can (hopefully) begin workouts again after seeing my doctor in a couple weeks, I look forward to even greater results! Already I have lost over 50 pounds since starting NFA, I no longer need blood pressure medication, and I fit into size 34 jeans…a feat I have not done since grad school 20 years ago!”

What followed were the photos you see above… right!?

These Stunning Looks Show What Anxiety and Depression Feel Like

By nature, most of our battles with anxiety and depression happen in our heads—and it’s really, really tempting to keep them hidden there. But beauty blogger Yasaman Ghedi wants to make those mental health struggles visible. That's why she started the #InsideOutChallenge on Instagram, which encourages people to use makeup to give a face (literally) to those struggles.

Yasaman’s formula is simple: Apply your everyday makeup to half of your face and then depict what living with mental illness feels like on other half. Here's Ghedi's finished product:

The results are as haunting as they are beautiful. (Check out examples of other people's take on the #InsideOutChallenge below.) Most importantly, though, they’re a reminder that the stigma and secrecy that so often surround mental illness are both major issues we need to fight.

Hi friends! Popping in for some Wednesday randomness for you. First, we are still enjoying this crockpot chicken and veggie stew – recipe is coming Friday, get pumped. I had some more for lunch yesterday, this time with some arugula on top!

moroccan chicken stew

Second, The Great Homemade Kombucha Experiment of 2016/2017 is still going strong! I mentioned previously Matt is trying his hand at homemade kombucha. Attempt #1 with a dry starter scoby was a fail, but attempt #2 with a scoby pilfered from a jar of purchased kombucha appears to be working!

7 Homemade Tomato Sauce Recipes That Would Make Your Grandma Proud

So, you’re not exactly a Top Chef in the kitchen… no biggie. We’re all about the small wins, anyway. One fairly painless (and healthy!) way to own dinnertime? Swap out that jar of spaghetti sauce for a homemade version. We’ve rounded up recipes to suit every taste—spicy, sweet, vegan, meaty—that are, as always, super simple to make. Sure, it takes a little more work than just opening a jar, but you’ll wind up with way fewer preservatives and salt than the store-bought kind, and get the satisfaction of a truly homemade meal. Serve over pasta, zoodles, grilled chicken, roasted vegetables, or even scrambled eggs (yep, try it, it’s great).

Strong body, strong mind – focusing on wellbeing for 2017

Source http://www.thefitbits.com/2017/01/strong-body-strong-mind-focusing-on.html

I’ve thrown myself heart first into 2017. Last year was a difficult one for me, for many reasons that I may or may not write about properly, but let’s just say that realising I had high blood pressure, being treated to my first panic attack, breaking my collarbone and wrist (silly Tess), and losing my precious, brave Yaya (Greek for nan) along with various other personal events that went a bit tits up meant I had a predominantly stressed and strung out 2016.

How Much Protein Do You Need

Source http://refineryfitnesspdx.com/how-much-protein-do-you-need/

Protein is amazingly important for our health and well being.  Since protein is the building block of our muscles, organs, tendons and skin, if we are not consuming enough protein in our diet, our body will start tearing down existing structures in our body.  Our hormone balance and immune systems are also impacted by the amount of protein we consume.  Protein is composed of amino acids, some of which our body produces and some that need to be obtained from our food.  Eating less than the recommended daily amount can have wide ranging consequences for our health.

Recommendations for the appropriate amount of protein vary widely, depending on age, sex, activity level and body size.    The USDA recommends getting about 15-20% of your daily calories from protein.  Each gram of protein has 4 calories, so for a 2000 calorie diet, you would consume 75-100 grams of protein a day.  Most studies recommend between .7- 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight depending on activity level and health goals.  Athletes and people who work physically demanding jobs usually require more protein than sedentary people.

Protein can be obtained from both animal and non-animal sources.  Animal sources of protein offer “complete” proteins.  Eggs, lean chicken, grass fed beef and dairy products are all excellent sources of complete proteins.  However, few plant based proteins are considered “complete” proteins, meaning they contain all th…
