The weather has taken a decided turn here in Portland this weekend.  It is hard to believe a week ago I was sweating on the side of a baseball field and today I am hunting around for my fleece before I head out to yoga.  As we move into this period of cold, wet, grey days, many people find themselves experiencing feelings of lethargy, sadness and insomnia.  Fortunately, there are steps you can take to improve these feelings.

What is Seasonal Affective Disorder?

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or the “Winter Blues” is thought to be a  subset of Major Depressive Disorder in which a person experiences a decreased mood related to the change in seasons.  SAD begins and ends at about the same time every year. Most people with SAD begin experiencing symptoms in the fall which continue into the winter months.  People who suffer from SAD often report a decrease in energy and increased feelings of moodiness. Less often, SAD causes depression in the spring or early summer, often leading to different symptoms than those of winter SAD.  In both types, SAD depressions are usually mild to moderate, but can occasionally be more severe. Treatment needs to be appropriate to the severity of the condition for each individual. Personal safety should be the first consideration in the assessment of all depression, as suicide or self harm can be a risk for people experiencing more severe depressive symptoms.

Three years ago I went through a breakup with someone I loved deeply.

I had no idea what had happened to me after I fell in love with this girl. I now know that I was asleep from the beginning to the very end of the relationship.

I was totally encapsulated with this girl to the point where I could not see what was in front of me. I was unable to see the red flags that were there in the beginning.

When I first laid eyes on her, I felt a magnetic pull. I knew that she was it for me. I had her as the one before I had spoken a word to her. And what made it even harder was that when I was with her, it felt like home, as if I had known her before.

So, no matter what she said, I had it sealed in my mind that this had to work.

How to Deal with Painful Emotional Triggers in Your Relationships

Not only did my wife help me revamp my resume, she drafted me a killer cover letter as well.

I opened the cover letter the other day and found a discrepancy, something that immediately touched my deepest core wound.

There, at the bottom of the page, where my name, email address, and phone number are supposed to go, was someone else’s phone number, not mine. It wasn’t even remotely close to being mine.

Within a matter of seconds my panic alarm went off. Abandonment alert! Abandonment alert!

Is my wife is cheating on me? Where did she meet this guy, and how long have they been talking to each other?

We get the ad is supposed to be over the top, but it shouldn’t make people feel ashamed about eating greens. And we couldn’t help but notice women were the only ones ordering salads in the ad, sending the not-so-subtle sexist message that it’s just females who want or need to eat healthy. Domino’s should be advocating that a balanced life includes pizza and salad—the company want to sell you both, after all.
