Is everything now voice-enabled — so that transition is done? Whine On. Is the response smart or, uh, just a response? Just tried an experiment, asking via Hey Siri for the best technologies to use for people with dementia. Got a nice and brief summary. Next pass, skipped the ‘Hey Siri’ part, asked the same question. This time it offered up the possibility of using ChatGPT which produced a long and useful list. So it appears Apple’s partnership with ChatGPT is working well. But why the first list at all? People asking the question don’t really want the longer list and are satisfie…

It remains to be seen as to whether xenotransplantation of organs from genetically engineered pigs will be competitive in comparison to the tissue engineering of new organs. Even given the challenges faced to date, it seems likely that xenotransplanation will be a going concern before the manufacture of viable tissue engineered organs. Initial trials in patients volunteers have taken place for the heart and kidney. As the report here illustrates, the last mile of discovery in which pig organs are transplanted into the first volunteers is likely to require as much work and reveal as many unforeseen issues as was the case for the earlier stages of development, in which the need for genetic engineering of the donor pigs was discovered.

Naked mole-rats live as much as nine times longer than similarly sized rodent species, suffer little age-related decline of function until very late life, and there are next to no examples of individuals in captivity suffering from cancer. Researchers have spent more than twenty years investigating the biochemistry of this species, in search of the reasons for their longevity and resistance to cancer. As for other areas of the study of the comparative biology of aging, the hope is that some of these findings could form the basis for therapies to treat cancer and slow aging in humans. Whether this is the case remains to be seen; researchers have only comparatively recently reached the point of identifying specific differences that might be relevant, and then <a href="https://www.fightaging.org/a…

“As a solid rock is not shaken by the wind, the wise are not shaken by praise or blame.” ~The Dhammapada, Verse 81
Some moments lift you like moonlight. Others break you like a wave. I’ve lived through both—and I’ve come to believe that the way we move through these emotional thresholds defines who we become.
By thresholds, I mean the turning points in our lives—experiences so vivid, painful, or awe-filled that they pull us out of our usual routines and bring us face to face with something real. Some come in silence, others with sound and light, but they all leave a mark. And they ask something of us.

“Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness.” ~Maya Angelou
I used to believe that healing and personal transformation required a lot of effort—writing page after page in a journal or getting up at the crack of dawn to carry out a morning routine, to name a couple.
When I moved through a phase of numbness—or the tunnel of darkness, as I now call it—it was frightening, and there seemed to be no end in sight. But one song found me at the right moment and changed everything.
In under five minutes, it achieved what all the tools and knowledge I had couldn’t: it made me feel something.
