Gym Etiquette 101: Don’t Break These 29 Unwritten Rules

The gym can be an intimidating place.

Besides the grunting and the weights dropping, there is a secret code of conduct that is totally foreign to any newcomer on what to do and not to do.

Note: If you’re scared to even step foot in the gym, check out our Beginner’s Guide to the Gym to feel confident from your first gym tour to your first barbell squat!

Now, I’ve worked in a gym for over a decade and lifted in gyms for twice as long. I’ll say that these rules of etiquette aren’t just for newbies. I see a lot of “veterans” who completely disregard them or just simply aren’t aware of what they are doing. So whether it’s your 1st or 500th time in the gym, it would serve you well to peruse this article.

We cover a lot here, and this list certainly isn’t exhaustive, but I don’t want you to get overwhelmed – don’t overthink every action you take at the gym. And you can’t use this article as an excuse for why you’re not going to the gym!

If I had to summarize every gym rule into three simple, guiding principles, they would be as follows:

Foods to Fight Anxiety and Stress

Lately, I have been hearing from many of my clients about how stressed out, anxious and overwhelmed they are feeling.  It seems that no matter what side of the political divide you live on, the contentious nature of our politics and the 24 hour news cycle has everyone feeling a little overwhelmed.  I like to help clients look for natural ways to reduce their anxiety and stress and food can be a big part of that picture.  Below are some ideas of foods to add to your diet to alleviate some of these anxious feelings.

Tryptophan Rich Foods:  Tryptophan, an essential amino acid, is an important precursor for the neurotransmitter serotonin.  Serotonin is considered a “feel good” chemical, promoting feelings of sleepiness, relaxation and calm.  It is also the precursor for melatonin, another chemical important for sleep.  Recent studies have shown that eating tryptophan rich foods by themselves may have a negative impact on the amount of tryptophan reaching the brain.  This decrease occurs because tryptophan, the least abundant amino acids in food, must fight with other amino acids to cross the blood-brain barrier.  Unfortunately, it is often crowded out by more plentiful amino acids.   However, combining protein rich food with some carbo…

Forgiveness Isn’t Weakness – Don’t Let Anger Hold You Back and Weigh You Down

For many years forgiveness was not in my mind, let alone my vocabulary. I was taught to believe that forgiveness was a sign of weakness, and I certainly did not forgive anyone who hurt me.

In the past, I have engaged in acts of revenge, which I thought was the right thing to do at those times. I was wrong.

One event that springs to my mind was when I was the target of a cruel prank. A group of guys had taunted a young man I knew, telling him that he was “whipped” by his girlfriend, who lived with him. To prove this wasn’t true and that he could “get anyone he wanted,” he pretended to like me and proceeded to call, text, and show an interest in me.

I didn’t know that he had a girlfriend, and I liked him, so I went along with this, unaware of the game. I soon found out what was going on. So, what did I do? I released all hell and vengeance.

Whether it’s making a mistake at work or wanting to overcome shyness and be bolder socially, this is a growing worry for most. The first thought I had when I sat with your question was that it’s OK to make mistakes. Human beings have a long history of questionable decision making, so you are not alone.

I think many have been taught through cultural conditioning that we ought to be perfect without exception. This expectation is not realistic. Further, I believe that anyone, who is humble and honest, would be very hard pressed to reflect back on their life and not uncover at least one error or lapse in good judgment, and that includes mistakes big and small. I also believe that when mistakes happen, that is the moment to practice mindfulness, self-kindness, compassion, and self-forgiveness.

This stair training adventure is for all people going to Greece and anyone else who would like to join. We will be going to brunch after to refuel. This is a great way to see a very different view of Seattle and get a great cardio workout.

Cougar Mountain Hike — Saturday, March 25th at 12pm

We will be hiking the Wildside Loop on Cougar Mountain — meet at ZenRock at 11:30 to carpool or at the trail head at noon. This is a easy hike to get started with spring hiking. Wear good waterproof shoes or boots and get into nature with us for a 4 mile trek in the woods.
