You know ashtanga as the physical form of yoga practice that has become famous in studios and gyms around the world. But what you may not know is that aṣṭāṅga refers to much more than just a series of postures and breathing. Aṣṭāṅga literally means ‘eight limbs’ or ‘eight parts’ and refers to eight different aspects of yoga practice defined by the great sage Patañjali as a method for reaching the “state” of yoga.
Prior to defining the eight limbs, Patañjali tells us that “by practicing the limbs of yoga, the impurities are gradually removed and the inner light of wisdom is revealed, leading to perfect discrimination.” In order to reach the state of yoga, you must first purify your system through yoga’s limbs. The first four limbs should be practiced diligently in order to move beyond them and experience yoga’s essence—a state of mental and spiritual clarity that allows you to reach your highest potential.
Patañjali defines the limbs of ashtanga yoga as yama, niyama, āsana, prāṇāyāma, pratyāhāra, dhāraṇa, dhyāna and samādhi although commentators explain that only the first four limbs can be truly practiced while the last four arise as a result of diligent practice of the first four. This article briefly describes each of…

Meet Ruth O’Mahony.
She’s a 49 year old physician-turned health content manager who struggled for years with unhealthy eating, yoyo-dieting, lack of movement, and a constant struggle to stick with anything for more than a few weeks before life got in the way.
This is something we can all relate to!
Although she found Nerd Fitness in early 2015, she spent months telling herself “I’m not ready yet, I’ll get started someday.” So she signed up for our email list, said “eventually!” and did nothing.
Sound familiar?
After she could barely close the seatbelt on a flight to Disney (where just walking was a chore), her mentality started to change “maybe ‘someday’ will never happen…I need to change my strategy on this.”
Fast Forward 7 months…. and she had a support group to learn from, a basic plan to follow, and excitedly started her push towards a better life.
So WHAT happened? Why, after 11 months of reading Nerd Fitness did she FINALLY take action? How did she go from “I’ll level up someday” to “I level up every day”? How did she drop 70+ pounds, go down 10+ clothing sizes, and radically transform her life?

Charles Platkin of Hunter’s Food Policy Center sent me this photo taken on the subway a week or so ago.

A croissant to advertise the school system’s breakfasts?
Charles and a colleague greatly favor the school breakfast program, but the ad? Not so much. They discuss it in a post: “<a href="http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001M2IZC4uC_FkzJ2ermyKrEwVi9T-24jM5leCUqGMxr4Y8qzhZnCTe9hvvkWUquvdeuCXstp1WpzxQqQ9V7hbIlDRBTK-QbimZTWRQqQaipbIQAlaYFdO_H7UktAip6N0WumHyRiARKUU6gQ5N4qnHFrKSS4F4b4-_eu5NnkJhXU6T38A4f7nSGNipM6_SF5Q-aZwRGJALigy8bdDAPyiu8mUO7Qdg7j1VKofsQshkxQlVj8_tXLBQi08iEpN8cR6bfOo-Dd7e1Ml5EG6H0u8_KnfUv9cocuFCevmB-617O9EwKfuBJAdLlKWfno0l3dPjfG0H0W4jV4GiasOb9l…

Hey friends! Matt and I stuck around town this past weekend, and our adventures had one main theme: be outside as much as possible!

I kicked off the outdoorsy-ness on Friday by biking over to Edge Yoga for a noon yoga class with Heather for a nice break in the workday. Our car was getting its oil changed at the shop, so I figured I’d dust off my commuter bike and get there that way instead. Success! Great class and I always forget how much I enjoy biking as my transportation – must do it more often!

It’s my duty to inform you of what has become a new ‘it’ physical feature that defines beauty and, apparently, sex appeal: back dimples (i.e., Venus dimples, butt dimples).
Excuse me … I just threw up a little.
I confess that ‘back dimples’ were not something I was consciously aware of until recently when a writer, working on an article about this topic, contacted me asking “… are there any exercises that can help with [back dimples] rather than getting a surgical option.”
My first thought after reading that email: you have got to be kidding me. This – indentations of the posterior sacroiliac joint (i.e., SI joint) – is a new ‘it’ feature worthy of recognition, and there’s a surgical option to create it? My second thought: holy crap, there’s actually a surgery for this?

I totally get it now; I see how a joint can be sexy. Just look at it in its magnificent glory. Photo from Wikipedia.

Hey friends! Happy Friday. 🙂 Matt and I are both sticking around town this weekend for the first time in over a month and looking forward to it – especially since it’s going to be sunny and warm in DC! It’s supposed to be almost 70 degrees, which is very strange especially since at yesterday morning’s track workout it was snowing?!

Seriously, though – weirdest winter ever.
We had a good workout yesterday, running between snow flakes – it was about 30 degrees and not too windy so actually a nice morning for a run. (p.s. check out this old post on How to Dress for Cold Weather Running for some tips!)
Also – it’s starting to get lighter in the mornings again which is awesome! Instead of it being totally dark when I arrived the sun was just starting to come up – yay!

“The ego is the false self—born out of fear and defensiveness.” ~John O’Donohue
“The soul is like a wild animal—tough, resilient, savvy, self-sufficient, and yet exceedingly shy.” ~Parker Palmer
Does it sometimes seem like the world is just a little too much for you? Do you feel that you need to protect yourself from the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune? (Thank you, Hamlet.) Are you a fragile flower being buffeted by life’s storms?
Then I think you’ve been listening to your ego too much. I understand all of those feelings very well, but I’ve recently discovered something life-changing: It’s only the ego, or small self, that’s fragile.
The soul—your authentic self—is a honey badger.
You know those honey badger videos on YouTube, where the little guy gets bitten by a cobra or stung by a whole swarm of African killer bees, but just keeps on going? That’s what your soul’s like. “Honey badger don’t care…”
We always have access to these two different perspectives, but most of the time we’re so identified with the small self that we forget about our honey badger souls.

“Why can’t I do this? I know what I need to do to get in shape, and I just can’t get myself to do it. I’ve yo-yo’d for years.”
I’ve been running Nerd Fitness for 8 years now (holy crap), and I have seen some of the most dramatic success stories from people of all walks of life that give me the biggest smile.
Single moms working two jobs, married couples that got in shape together, people who have been overweight their entire lives, and others who began powerlifting at the age of 50.
In that same time, however, I have seen tons of people who have been reading NF for years and struggled to find success. They might succeed for a short amount of time, or even a few months, before backsliding into old habits, and they just can’t seem to make things stick.
What’s interesting is that with both groups, they knew what they needed to do: more vegetables, more movement, less junk food, fewer calories on average, and a healthy exercise routine.
This wasn’t surprising: we all know what we need to do to get fit. So what separates the group of people who have fundamentally changed their lives and become new people from the other group who continue to struggle with little to no results?
I was curious, so about a month ago I sent a survey out to NF Rebels asking them for their honest answers on why they have (or haven’t) succeeded, and the responses really surprised me.
