Thanks. Giving.

Thanksgiving is a great reminder to be grateful for the gifts around you. Not the physical gifts, but the infinite beauty tucked into every corner of your life.

But you needn’t wait until the fourth Thursday in November (USA) or the second Monday in October (Canada) to be thankful, or giving.

What if, instead, you take 90 seconds each morning and write down three things for which you are thankful? What will your list look like? How will it shape your day?

And what if each day you focus on contributing beyond yourself in one small way: a hug, a meal, or just a few minutes of your time? How will this daily giving shape your life?

Setting winter training goals

Source http://www.thefitbits.com/2016/11/setting-winter-training-goals.html

Oops. The last post I wrote was about pizza and that was nearly two weeks ago. Bad Tess.

Not doing very well at the whole ‘fitness blogger’ thing at the moment – work’s been busy and my weekends have been packed with fun things like weddings, bonfires and drinks out – which basically means that early morning endorphins have mostly been replaced with paracetamol and junk food.

And what about the evenings, I hear you say? Well, I don’t know about you, but when I’m busy at work and have lots going on in between, I just can’t be arsed with exercise and would rather curl up with a nice hot stew and magazine.

Just realised this is a massive de ja vu -> I wrote practically the same thing exactly this time last year!

So yes… a line has to be drawn somewhere, and I’m doing it now. As we near the end of November and these gorgeous autumn colours turn to grey it’s t…

Tips to Survive the Holiday Party Season

Source http://refineryfitnesspdx.com/tips-to-survive-the-holiday-party-season/

The Holiday season is upon us and for many of us with it comes parties, alcohol and a departure from our normal eating habits!  Why is it when it is on a beautiful tray, on a table filled with other treat laden beautiful trays does food I would never consider eating suddenly sound good?  (And if I have had a glass of wine, it doesn’t even have to be on a beautiful tray!)  With the kick off to the holiday parties on Turkey day next week, these are my ideas to avoid the usual mindless munching.

  • Eat before I go:  I am going to have a small, protein filled snack about an hour before I have to  leave for the party.  The protein will keep me full longer and keep me from reaching for high calorie foods just because I am starving.
  • Check out all options before filling my plate:  Before I take a plate, I am going to look at all the food options in the room and decide which ones will be the best choices.  This does not mean I will not have any “treats” but that I am going to decide which ones are really “special” and are worth the indulgence.  (Because really, what are the holidays without some “treats”!)
  • I am going to fill my plate with healthy choices:  I plan to fill my plate with as many fruits,  vegetables and other  nutrient dense food like shrimp as I can.  I plan to skip the dips, cheeses, fried foods and other foods with a high calorie to nutrient ratio.  If m…

Make Your Own Starbucks Protein Bistro Box – So easy!

Source http://www.livelifeactive.com/2016/09/20/make-starbucks-protein-bistro-box-easy/

I am a huge fan of the quick, grab and go Starbucks Protein Bistro Box because it’s filling and the macros aren’t too bad nutritionally.  the only thing I don’t love is the price of $4.95.  That means if you had one every day of the work week, it would cost you around $25 per week.  Seems a bit pricey to me!

Starbucks protein bistro box - Make Your Own DIY

I wanted to recreate this Starbucks Protein Bistro Box and make my own at home for MUCH cheaper, so this is what I did.  Oh…I also wanted to add some more greens and a little more protein in mine so that I could have it for a lunch instead of just as a snack.

What to buy:

  • Eggs
  • Slice of cheese (I got cheddar, but whatever cheese you want, will work)
  • Apples
  • Grapes
  • Peanut butter to go packs
  • Celery
  • Cucumber

I hard-boiled my eggs, cut up my veggies and made these cute to go packs for my lunches this week.  Total time it took, about 12 minutes because that’s how long it takes me to boil my eggs.  Aren’t they so cute!?

Trick: Sprinkle some lemon juice on your apples …

The Ultimate Guide to Building Any Physique (or Skill Set)

Source https://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2016/11/15/the-ultimate-guide-to-building-any-physique-or-skill-set/

Earlier in the year, I heard something that made my head explode.

The 2016 Summer Olympics had just ended. The internet was aflutter with a debate about Usain Bolt, the fastest man on the planet.

The debate was about how quickly Usain Bolt could run a mile.

Scientists, marathon runners, cross country coaches, Olympians, and others had one heck of a debate. People started calculating his pace from 100 meters or 400 meters and extrapolated that out over the course of a mile. Math geeks couldn’t get enough of the thought experiment.

So obviously this begs the question: “Well, how fast does he actually run a mile?”

There’s just one problem:

Usain Bolt has never run a mile.

WHAT?!

As pointed out by the New Yorker, “Usain Bolt’s agent, Ricky Simms, won’t say whether he believes that his client could run a mile in less than five minutes. But Si…

How to Improve Your Work/Life Balance and Reclaim Your Time

Work Life Balance

“You will never feel truly satisfied by work until you are satisfied by life.” ~Heather Schuck

When I was two years old, my parents got divorced.

In other words, I’ve never seen my biological parents spending loving time with each other. I never had the chance to experience the small things most children take for granted.

For example…

  • I don’t remember my mom and dad ever sharing a loving kiss after a long day at work
  • I don’t remember ever having both parents around to tuck me in at night
  • And I never overheard simple “how was your day?” conversations between my parents in the kitchen

As a kid who didn’t know any different, I thought this was normal. I’d stay with my mom during the week and visit my dad on the weekends. No big deal, that was that.

Looking back, I’m lucky that even though my biological parents were separated, both my parents loved me unconditionally, and supported me whenever I needed it. (And I’m happy to say they still do!)

But, truthfully, the reason for the divorce still saddens me to this day.

The primary reason my parents divorced is because my father was a workaholic.

Because I’m expecting to be a first-time fa…

Minimalist Home Tour: Ryan Nicodemus

Oh—hello there! Welcome to our minimalist home. Well, really I’m the minimalist—my partner, Mariah, is not—but it’s still our minimalist home, right? And by the way, it’s more of a loft than a traditional home. Anyway, follow me this way, please.

From the front door, we walk through a short hallway and into the kitchen:

Because the loft is all one open space, you can turn around and see our livingroom, as well as our favorite feature—that view! (Our cat seems to like it, too.)

When To Stop Asking Why

Source http://mentalitywod.com/11508/when-to-stop-asking-why/

“Know your WHY.” You hear myself and other leaders say it all of the time.

I encourage you to know your purpose behind doing whatever it is you’re currently doing. Before any event, important day or training session, I suggest you run through a few key reminders why it matters to you, why you want to give it your best and why you want to accomplish your goals.

The stronger your why, the stronger your will. The more connected you are with your purpose for doing something, the more likely you’ll pursue excellence in it. Your why matters.

But, there are also times when asking “why” is a flat-out waste of time. Searching for answers as to “why” something occurred can be a huge distraction, it can send you into a rut and it can paralyze to a point where you become inactive.

See continuing to ask yourself WHY you’re pursuing what you’re pursing is incredibly valuable.

But, continuing to search for why something has occurred (and beating yourself up over it, or staying down for wayyyy too long because you don’t understand how it’s possible) is not helpful.

Sometimes there aren’t clear answers for shit that happens. You get injured or sick….

How to Have a Stress-Free Holiday Eating Experience

Source http://www.fannetasticfood.com/how-to-have-a-stress-free-holiday-eating-experience/

I share a variation of this post on how to have a stress-free holiday eating experience almost every year, but it’s worth re-sharing because I know it’s something that’s on most of your minds right now, what with Thanksgiving coming up next week (and the December holiday extravaganza after that).

So – how do you enjoy the holidays in a way that embraces the deliciousness of the meals/parties but also leaves you feeling good, both physically and mentally? How can the holiday eating experience be joyful, not stressful?

stress free holiday eating

So many websites and magazine articles tell us how to avoid this and deny ourselves that around the holidays, turning situations that should be fun into stressful internal battles of will. I saw a couple blog posts recently recommending things like “weigh yourself every day!” or “wear your tightest clothes so you will be uncomfortable and won’t eat much!” or “avoid anything with cream!” or “only make/bring food you hate!” Seriously?! This is the advice being given out now? All things that will make people feel extremely guilty, unhappy in their bodies, and like food…
