This is the key to any successful and dramatic physique transformation. Let me explain…

Where you are now, is your comfort zone. Your health and fitness goals are where you want to be.

So by definition, your goals are outside of your comfort zone – if they weren’t, then you’d have accomplished them by now…

Which means that in order to achieve the body you want (or any other worthwhile goal in your life) you’re going to have to venture outside of that safe, warm, cozy comfort zone and experience some discomfort.

When it comes to a fitter, more toned body, it means you’ll have to experience the discomfort of hunger from time to time… it means you’ll have to push yourself in your workouts, and keep pushing even when your muscles are burning and crying for rest.

… It means you’ll have to follow your nutrition plan – even on the days you feel like eating pizza and ice cream (or whatever your “sinful” indulgence is).

… And it means you’ll have to adapt and reasses when things don’t go according to plan or life throws a curveball at you to see if you’re paying attention.

Getting uncomfortable is what makes us grow. It’s what makes us change for the better. So the sooner you come to terms with it, the sooner you’ll have that rocki…

Here’s what I mean …

Every day, your body is exposed to chemicals, pesticides, industrial solvents, and heavy metals that seep into your bloodstream.

5 “Anytime, Anywhere” Exercises that’ll Keep You Lean, Toned and Strong!

From time to time, it’s always a good idea to change things up with your workouts.

This prevents your body from adapting and getting used to the same workout that’s done over and over.

That’s why today I’d like to give you 5 exercises you can use to change things up a bit… and keep your body from guessing what you’ll do next.

These exercises can be done anywhere, since they’re bodyweight exercises. Mix and match them between your normal workouts for best results.

Here they are:

Pushup: This old classic is effective since it involves your chest, triceps and shoulders (deltoids). Do 3 sets of 10-20 reps. If you have trouble doing a regular pushup, try a knee (modified) pushup. Do this by placing both your knees on the floor, while keeping the rest of your upper body in the pushup position. If you struggle on bench press, try pushups only for about four weeks. Then go back to benching again. You’ll be pleasantly surprised when you do!

Triceps pushups: Same as above, except bring your hands closer together. Your thumbs should be nearly touching. Now do a pushup from this starting position.  Do them on your knees if necessary.  This will help tone your triceps (the bottom of your arm) and help you get rid of the “jiggly” arm fat many people can’t stand.

Jump Squats: Start in a squatting position…

I’m sitting in a sunny piazza in Rome, drinking a perfect cup of cappuccino, at the beginning of a long vacation. You’d think I’d be floating on cloud nine in total relaxation.

I’m not. Instead, I’m consumed with worry, eating me up inside, making me so queasy that I can’t even dig into the delicate fried zucchini flowers that are a Roman specialty. Instead, a persistent negative dialogue buzzes in my head as I contemplate the possible payback for my break from routine: What if I don’t get enough writing assignments to outweigh the expense of my Italian splurge? How will I pay the bills? What was I thinking?

It’s not that I don’t have projects waiting once I get home. I have plenty, the deadlines looming, and I worry about that, too, the nasty voice in my head continually hissing: You have work to do! Get back to the hotel.

The constant clamor inside my head robs me of the pleasure I know any normal person would be experiencing, yet however hard I try, it seems I can’t appreciate the feel of the sun on my skin, nor the cute little frothy-milk heart the friendly barista has formed in my oversized cup. Do I really want to spoil a trip that I worked so hard to make happen? Is there anything I can do to calm my anxious soul?

Schrafft’s was a chain of restaurants, with a candy store attached, that catered to ladies who lunch. To NPR’s Lynn Neary, who used to waitress there, Schrafft’s “always felt like the epicenter of the comfort zone.”

I believe I am one of the few people in the world who actually had tickets to Woodstock. Of course, I never got a chance to use them, because on the first day of the festival, I was filling up relish trays and taking dinner orders from customers at Schrafft’s.

All this came back to me in a rush of memories when I picked up the new book Ten Restaurants that Changed America. Schrafft’s was one of the restaurants listed. “Really”? I thought. “Schrafft’s changed America?”

2 Week Cold Water Challenge

The Challenge Specifics

  • Every day for 2 weeks spend at least 3 minutes (I’m doing at least 5) in cold water
  • You could use a cold shower, an ice bath, a natural body of water or whatever. If it’s uncomfortable for you, there are likely some benefits to it, even if it’s just the mental benefit of intentionally doing something challenging
  • How cold is cold? Cold water is really anything from freezing to about 70 degrees – Reference the right side of the chart above – I’d suggest practicing a few times in 55-65 degree water before you go even colder and use caution if you do. When I’ve gone below 50 it is actually painful to touch and it isn’t recommended for everyone

This week I added 40lbs of ice to the tub I’ve been using and it was a legit Ice Bath (pic below) …I hung out in there for 8 minutes working on 4 count square breathing
