The opportunity to work with clients one-on-one is a luxury–not only for our clients, but also for us coaches and trainers. Clients pay a premium of $60-200 to have our undivided attention for an hour. In turn, we use this time to motivate, challenge, and educate our clients with the hope that our influence carries over into the other 23 hours of their day. It only makes sense, then, that we need to use every minute of that time with the client wisely and effectively.
In order to do so, I propose that we stop warming up and stretching with clients. Why? They’re a waste of time within the session, and not to mention, a waste of money.

When I used to work for other personal training companies, I would spend 10-15 minutes warming up with my clients in the beginning of the session, and then leave 5-10 minutes at the end of the session to stretch them. That’s almost 30 minutes of the session spent doing things that the client can do on their own. If all a client has is 60 minutes, 2-3 times per week, these warm-ups and stretches are eating up big chunks of their real workout time.
Whether we like it or not, the only exercise most of our cli…

“We need never be ashamed of our tears.” ~Charles Dickens
We have all cried, all of us, some more than others.
But today I am not here to divide us by the liters of tears we have shed.
Today I want to unite us because we are all the same.
We all feel sad, stressed, overwhelmed, scared, and frustrated at times.
Any stay-at-home parent would understand my frustration, my misery, and my overwhelmed days.
It has eaten me up on the inside. I have been staying at home for the past seven years, looking after my kids, with no face-to-face interaction with adults like you and me.
All I do is get three boys fed and cleaned (god knows, sometimes I skip the cleaning part). All I do is break up fights. All I do is clear the never-ending mess in the living room. All I do is everything for them, but nothing for me.
Some days I ask myself why I have decided to stay at home.
Some days I ask myself why I have been given such a difficult task.
Some days I feel that I’m not cut out to be a mother.
Those are the days when I sit and curl up my knees, with my face in my hands, shoulders heaving, and my two-year-old by my side, wondering what’s wrong with Mama.
And after the tears have run d…

With all the recent research being released about the detrimental effects of sugar on the body, many people are looking to reduce their sugar consumption. Excessive sugar consumption has been shown to lead to insulin resistance, increased stomach fat, increased inflammation in the body and a suppressed immune system. Unfortunately, for people eating a Standard American Diet which includes lots of processed food, sugar is impossible to avoid. It is added in the places you would expect like cookies, candy and pastries but also has a big presence in items like ketchup, yogurt, breads, pasta sauces, cured meats and chicken nuggets. It is ubiquitous in the American food system. However, there are some steps you can focus on to help you successfully avoid added sugar.
Add protein to your meals. Try to include protein with all of your meals. Adding protein will help you step off the sugar swing roller coaster by balancing blood sugar. Adding 10-20 grams of protein to every snack or meal will slow the adsorption of any sugar you do eat which should end the incredible sugar crashes that lead to uncontrollable sugar cravings.
Focus on a whole foods diet. The more you eat foods which are in their natural state like apples, broccoli, whole grains and leafy greens, the easier it will be to avoid added sugar. Steer clear of food in a package. Sugar is often added to packaged food to…

When I was a dieter I always had a goal weight that I thought would change my life. I’d get on the scale (if I was brave enough) and would hold my breath as I watched the needle move, calculating in my mind how many pounds away I was from happiness.
In retrospect I don’t know what I expected to happen at that magic number. If I had been less delusional I might have acknowledged that the few times I did manage to reach my goal I instantly adjusted it a few pounds downward, the flicker of joy suppressed by the sudden realization that an even smaller pair of jeans may be in my future.
Ugh. Dieting is the worst.
Okay, so what if you’re done with the dieting neurosis but still want to lose weight for health reasons? Is there a target or ideal weight you should shoot for?
I get asked this question a lot, and unfortunately there is no easy answer. There are, however, several frameworks and benchmarks you can use to help guide your efforts.

Some of us retract; we retreat to a quiet place. We hide; it is one of the most beautiful and skillful practices of the natural world.
Think about it… the held bud of a summer rose, a hibernating bear, dark before the dawn, snow before spring. Hiding is always looked at as a bad thing, but I believe it is underestimated. Life; we emerge from our mother after hiding for 9 months. That is the time to grow, and ready ourselves for our birth into the light of the world; if we come too early then we are in need of much care by many hands.
If done correctly, hiding is the spirit guide for the assurance that you will emerge whole. At the first start of life, as kids, or even as growing adults… we can recoil from the conditions that have caught us and imprisoned us, many times in ways where we have been too easily compromised and too easily discarded.
We live in a day and age of the scrutinized soul and our immediate disclosure of our thoughts, dreams, and desires exposed too much, too early, and often times our best qualities forced out of us too soon into this world with minds and ideals that oppress our sense of self and our sense of others.
What is REAL and TRUE, if you think about it, always starts as hidden. What is valued inside of us should not be known in ways that diminishes its presence.
Hiding is freedom from the misunderstanding of others, especially with an ever enclosing world view of oppressiveness that tries to name us, anticipate…

Recently I broke down and bought myself a new toy. I bought a treadmill for my house! For all the days that I can’t make it to the gym, or just feel like watching The Bachelor while walking on the treadmill, I can now do that at home. Yay! I also wanted to share this adorable DIY Pegboard Wall I created for my home gym / workout room and it’s so easy that anyone can do it.
I recently purchased a new home and it has 3 bedrooms in it. My idea was to have a master bedroom, a guest bedroom and a third room being an office. Well…I started to think and realized that I use a laptop and there’s no need for an actual office as I usually work from my couch or bedroom or wherever the heck I want. Soo….I decided to turn the extra room into a workout room instead. Maybe this will force me to workout more often…let’s see if that happens
So here’s a look at how my extra room looked a few days ago…it had become a dumping area with a bunch of extra crap that I don’t know what to do with yet. I needed to make that space have a purpose.

Yeah it was not a pretty sight..</p…

Ok, so it took me a week to get the blog set up. I made the decision to send out my “wake up” email and start my blog on the spur of the moment (and then informed my website guy after the fact). Apparently it’s more complicated than pushing a button. This is why I should stick to training and writing and leave the IT difficulties to the professionals.
Anyway…I’ll start with a recap of the last 10 days and go from there.
Fuel. It’s the hardest part of the equation. I find it extremely difficult to make good dietary decisions if I’m flying by the seat of my pants. In my experience that’s pretty much true across the board for most people. Maybe not you; maybe you can make good decisions on the spur of the moment when you’re hungry. Not me, I have to plan in advance. This week I’ve been eating rotisserie chicken and a wild rice/quinoa mixture for lunch. Easy. Simple. To keep it lively I need a little hot sauce.
So….today my challenge for you is to plan out your eating schedule for tomorrow. If you have a plan, you will make better decisions.

My book, Soda Politics, came out not quite a year ago but so much has happened since then that it’s been hard to keep up with everything that’s happening in campaigns to discourage consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages.
Fortunately, Healthy Food America’s Casey Hinds puts out a daily roundup of sugar and soda news (you can sign up for it and HFA’s other materials here).
A few recent items of particular interest:
USA Today’s editorial, “soda taxes fall flat“
More effective ways already are being used to change people’s diets. The best use of government authority is to empower people with the information they need to make healthier choices.
The editorial comes with a poll, still up. You can vote on it here. At this moment only 183 votes have come in, 51% strongly in favor of the editorial opinion.
