I’m very pleased to announce that the Trans-NIH GeroScience Interest Group (GSIG) and partners will host its second summit in 2016. The “Disease Drivers of Aging: 2016 Advances in Geroscience Summit” will take place on April 13–14 at the New York Academy of Sciences in New York City. Members of the Geroscience Interest Group from the NIH, with essential collaboration and support from the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Federation for Aging Research, and the Gerontological Society of America, have developed a theme and program for a second geroscience summit requested by the research community….

When I began graduate school in 1999, I knew right away that my experience would be different from that of my peers: I am a female scientist of color, and when I looked for others that looked like me, I saw only a few. Naturally, I wondered why this was the case and whether anything could be done to change the situation. While I understood the complexities of this issue, I believed that something could be done, and fortunately when I arrived at NIH, I found ready agreement among my colleagues….

From all the injuries our body can sustain, damage to the brain is the most likely to cause death or permanent disabilities. Traumatic brain injury is a highly incident condition: it is estimated that up to 60 million people worldwide may suffer any type of traumatic brain injuries each year, including mild injuries, mainly due to motor vehicle accidents, falls or aggressions.
Brain injuries can have severe consequences, both physical and cognitive, and there’s a huge need for good therapeutic solutions.
The consequences of traumatic brain injury
Traumatic brain injury entails much more than just its immediate effects. There are many long-term consequences that are most likely due to progressive injury of neurons and axons triggered by the initial traumatic insult.
One of the most detrimental consequences of brain trauma is <a href…
