Most government funding agencies, including the NIH, have special pots of money reserved for small businesses. “But M-D,” you say, “I’m in academia, I’m a scientist—what does business funding have to do with me?” But before you dismiss this funding opportunity, I invite you to look a little more closely….

“Hangry” is slang for that feeling of anger you may get when you’re hungry. It’s very common, in my experience… My friendly advice: don’t make any important decisions when you’re hungry. Why? Because you’re more likely to act on an impulse. And this is not just a personal conclusion: this was actually the main finding of a study carried out at The Sahlgrenska Academy of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, and recently published at Neuropsychopharmacology.
Impulsivity is a form of impaired decision-making wherein decisions are made with a lack of ability to plan for the future. Broadly speaking, impulsivity includes two components: impulsive actions and impulsive choices. These impulsive behaviors are characteristic of many psychiatric and behavioral disorders, such as gambling, substance abuse, eating disorders, for example. Research on th…

Today I’m honoring LuAnne and the 47 million people around the world who are living with Alzheimer’s by participating in The Longest Day, a sunrise-to-sunset event that symbolizes the challenging journey of those living with the disease and their caregivers.
How can I tell you about my wife LuAnne? In the simplest words, she is the love of my life and my bride since the age of 19. But words escaped me when, at 55, LuAnne was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease.I still love being with LuAnne, but because of Alzheimer’s, she can no longer tell me what she sees, what she feels or what she wants. And while conversation eludes us, on The Longest Day I will use words in another way. From sunrise to sunset, I will write poetry in honor of LuAnne, and share my work publicly on a blog I created just for the event. Why poetry? Because, in the wo…

Looking for genetic, health, and medical data to use in your research? Are you thinking of investigating genetic risks and influences on health conditions, particularly those related to aging but wondering how to get the data? Qualified researchers can now for the first time access data from one of the United States’ largest and most diverse genomics projects—the Genetic Epidemiology Research on Aging (GERA). The GERA cohort, at Kaiser Permanente Northern California system, has data on 78,000 members. You can apply to use these data in your research….

Psychedelics are powerful substances that alter perception, mood, and cognition. Psychedelic use has been a part of human history for thousands of years – for both spiritual and recreational practices – and they have been the focus of intense debate. Now, psychedelic drugs – once the symbol of a 1960s subculture – are being evaluated to treat depression.
A new study, published in Lancet Psychiatry, reports a small trial of psilocybin (a psychedelic substance naturally found in some mushroom species) for treatment-resistant depression. A total of 12 patients with moderate to severe unipolar depression received 2 doses of psilocybin 1 week apart along with psychological support. (A 10-mg dose was given as a test dose and a 25-mg dose was given as the therapeutic dose 7 days later.) The patients had experienced symptoms of depression for an average of nearly 18 yea…
