What is happening to my vision?

Are you experiencing poor vision in low lighting? Do you have to turn on overhead lights when a lamp used to be sufficient?
How about the glare you’ve been seeing as a car approaches you while driving at night, or the halo that appears around car headlights or streetlights?
Do you have what appears to be “washed out” color vision, blurred vision, or are you seeing double images?
Low contrast sensitivity is another problem many people experience. Can you read black print on a blue background, or can you see the contour of a dark-colored car while driving at night?
Are you noticing a yellowing or darkening of things around you?
If you …

Engineering Viruses that Only Replicate in Cancer Cells

One of the many interesting approaches to targeting cancer cells for destruction is the use of viruses that are largely innocuous to humans, but replicate preferentially in cells exhibiting the characteristics of cancer, such as continual cellular replication. Researchers here demonstrate a way to engineer a virus to require the biochemistry of cell replication for it to also replicate, ensuring that it will affect only cancerous tissue.

Much research in recent years has investigated genetically modifying adenoviruses to kill cancers, with some currently being tested in clinical trials. When injected, these adenoviruses replicate inside cancer cells and kill them. Scientists are trying to design more efficient viruses, which are better able to target cancer cells while leaving normal cells a…

Mind jumble: Understanding chemo brain (Stanford Medicine):

Sarah Liu was treated for leukemia as a teenager. She attended her high school graduation on a four-hour pass from Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and was bald under her white graduation cap, her arm bandaged where she’d been receiving chemotherapy drugs.

Liu survived cancer and the ordeal of her treatment, and for many years she thrived. But today, at 53, she struggles to remember the names of all the Stanford oncologists who helped her, though she reveres them for saving her life. Many years later, her childhood cancer treatments — chemotherapy and radiation — have left her brain muddled…She’s a…
