Microglial Neuroinflammation as a Cause of Tau Aggregation

Chronic inflammation in the brain is an important aspect of all neurodegenerative conditions. In particular, as discussed in this open access paper, there is good evidence for inflammatory and dysfunctional (and senescent) microglia to drive the tau protein aggregation characteristic of late stage Alzheimer’s disease. It remains to be seen as to how the research community will build on past years of research on this topic to develop therapies, but one of the best near term possibilities is the use of senolytic therapies such as the <a href="https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2015/03/senolytic-drugs-to-kill-off-senescent-ce…

Senescent Cells in Blind Mole Rats do not Exhibit the Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype

Source https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2019/11/senescent-cells-in-blind-mole-rats-do-not-exhibit-the-senescence-associated-secretory-phenotype/

Naked mole-rats live as much as nine times longer than similarly sized rodent species. A short summary of what is known of their biochemistry is that they exhibit many of the molecular signs of aging found in other mammals, such as oxidative damage, presence of senescent cells, and so forth, but few to none of the consequences found in other mammals. Naked mole rats stay fit and healthy and physiologically youthful right up until very late life. The near relative species of blind mole-rat has many of the same characteristics, although it is less well studied than naked mole-rats at the present time.

Happy Food Politics Halloween

No getting around it.  It’s candy time again.

Researchers (somebody has to do this) tell us that candy popularity varies by state.

Here are a few items I’ve been collecting for this occasion.

2-Ingredient Vegan PayDay Bites

If you’ve followed along for a while, you likely know we have a thing for Snickers bars (and candy bars in general).

Another favorite? PayDays — delicious caramel nougat coated in salty peanuts. What’s not to love?!

These 2-ingredient, 15-minute vegan PayDays are my healthier, vegan-ized take on the classic candy bar.

It starts with adding fresh pitted dates to a food processor along with a little sea salt (optional) for enhanced deliciousness.

5-Ingredient Vegan Chocolate Turtles

Healthier “candy” for the win! Let us show you how easy it is to make these 5-ingredient Vegan Chocolate Turtles!

This easy, 5-ingredient dessert starts by mixing dates and almond meal to form a moldable dough that acts as the turtle base.

Next, toast pecans and add four to each turtle to make the “legs.” We could squeal at the cuteness happening right here.

Last, melt chocolate and coconut oil and top the turtles to make the “shells”!

Early Detection of Misfolded Amyoid-β in the Blood Implies Greater Risk of Later Alzheimer's Disease

Source https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2019/10/early-detection-of-misfolded-amyoid-%CE%B2-in-the-blood-implies-greater-risk-of-later-alzheimers-disease/

In recent years, a great deal of effort has been put towards means of assessing risk of Alzheimer’s disease as early as possible in aging individuals. The results here are an illustrative example of initiatives focused on amyloid-β in the blood: assays based on a blood sample are somewhat easier to develop than most of the other options; amyloid-β levels in the brain are known to increase slowly over time; and the presence of amyloid-β in the brain and bloodstream are in some form of dynamic equilibrium with one another.

Discipline Challenge: What My Mind Does When I Commit to Hard Things

Source http://zenhabits.net/45-day-discipline/

By Leo Babauta

In the middle of last month, I set myself a 45-day discipline challenge, just to see what my mind would do.

I like the idea of pushing myself out of my comfort zone, and so I decided to take on 12 things at once, which is against my usual advice!

The challenge isn’t over yet, but I’d like to share some of my findings so far.

So my challenge for 45 days was to follow these 12 things each day:

  1. Wake early (between 5-6am, which is early for me these days)
  2. Meditate first thing
  3. Read
  4. Plan my Most Important Tasks (MITs)
  5. Do my first MIT early
  6. Cold shower
  7. Fast until mid-afternoon
  8. Study in the late afternoon
  9. Walk in the late afternoon
  10. Exercise (weights, only 3 days a week)
  11. Meditate in the evening
  12. No alcohol

I should note that none of these is individually that hard for …
