I’m not sure how this happened, but I posted the title and cover of this book in October without saying a thing about it.  My apologies.  Here it is again.

Darryl Benjamin and Lyndon Virkler.  Farm to Table: The Essential Guide to Sustainable Food Systems for Students, Professionals, and Consumers.  Chelsea Green, 2016.

 

This is two books in one.

The first part, Farm, is about the real costs of industrial agriculture, environmental and human, and what can be and is being done about them.

The second part, Table, is a how-to for restaurants, schools, and institutions who want to source from local farms and for local farmers who want to supply those places.

The book gives specific examples illustrated with charts and photos and provides theory as well as practice suggestions.

The chapter on marketing gives the seven Ps–product, price, place, promotion, people, process, and physical evidence—along with things to consider and tips.

We have emphasized throughout this book that Farm-to-Table products sell themselves.  This is usually true once people have sampled their quality, understand their importance to the community and to the environment, and know where to find the…

Maybe you are a graduate student, a postdoc, or a new junior faculty member. You have carefully crafted a fellowship application or a career development application. Now, you sit on pins and needles hoping to hear that reviewers love what you propose and that the NIA will make an award. But wait! I wish that happy conjunction (reviewers love it, the NIA funds it) were always true. But in these times, it can happen that reviewers love it, but the NIA does not have the money to fund it. For fellowship and career development awards the unhappy conjunction (too much reviewer love for the money) also makes funding decisions particularly tricky….

Pack a Power Lunch

People often talk about breakfast being the most important meal of the day but lunch can be just as instrumental in a successful, productive afternoon.  Eating a carb loaded heavy meal mid day can mean struggling to make it through that afternoon meeting.  Instead pack a lunch design to help you coast through the day.

Stock up on protein:  Protein is a slow burning fuel that will help you stay full longer, balance blood sugar and give you sustained energy.  Good choices include lean chicken, hard boiled eggs, cheese, nut butters, protein powders and tofu.

Focus on Healthy Fats:  Your brain is made of 60% fat so providing it with healthy fats keeps it functioning at its best.  High fat foods also increase feeling of satiety leaving you feeling satisfied longer, decreasing those afternoon trips to the vending machine.  Salmon, avocado, nut butters, Greek yogurt or nuts are just a few great choices for your lunch.

Avoid simple carbs:  Simple carbs like white pasta or white rice are quickly absorbed in the body leading to blood sugar swings.  Complex carbs like brown rice, whole wheat pasta, fruit, vegetables and whole grain breads pack in more nutrients than simple carbs, because they are higher in fiber and digest more slowly. This also makes them more filling, preventing that mid afternoon energy slump.

Have you ever felt the urge to fix someone? And by fix I mean observe their circumstances and tell them what you think they’re doing wrong and exactly how you think they should fix it?

We’ve all done it. We’re all guilty.

Especially with close friends or family.

“If he would only listen to me and do what I say then everything would work out just fine!”

Sound familiar?

I was having tea with a good friend the other week (let’s call her Sally), and she was relating with much exasperation the story of how her sister was wasting her life in her corporate job when she was SO creative and should be working for herself in a creative role. And then she would be happy (according to Sally). Which apparently she’s not (according to Sally).

Sally went on further to say (with as much exasperation) that she had called her and conveyed this opinion to her sister. Because Sally felt she was right and that her sister needed saving. Not surprisingly, it was not v…

Sniff Out Alzheimer’s Risk with Powerful New Smell Test

A provocative new report suggests a low-cost, non-invasive testing protocol may identify older individuals at increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) investigators discovered testing individuals’ ability to recognize, remember and distinguish between odors provided similar recommendations as genetic, imaging, and more detailed memory tests.

The report — suggesting testing of both olfactory and cognitive abilities as a means to designate candidates for treatments designed to halt or slow Alzheimer’s symptom development — has been published online in Annals of Neurology.

Mark Albers, M.D., Ph.D., of the MGH Department of Neurology, the principal investigator and corresponding author of the report says:

“There is increasing evidence that the neurodegeneration behind Alzheimer’s disease starts at least 10 years before the onset of memory symptoms. The development of a digitally-enabled, affordable…
