The NIA summer training program builds the pipeline for the future biomedical research workforce. Our Summer Institute, just renamed the Butler-Williams Scholars Program, provides early to mid-career scientists with a unique opportunity to interact with leaders in the field of aging and health disparities research. Scientists who attend learn how to design strong projects and put together competitive grant applications, as well as develop relationships and networks that often continue long after the week-end goodbyes. I’d like to share with you how the training works its magic….

Buying Organic

organics

People often lament to me the high cost of organic fruits and vegetables.  I definitely feel their pain.  I know my grocery bill has significantly increased since I began focusing on buying organic.  However, I do feel buying organic is important to decrease our exposure to harmful toxins for ourselves, the environment and the farmers growing our food.  But what if it is just not financially feasible for you to buy everything organic?  Are there some specific areas you should focus on?

When working with clients, I ask them to think about a few different areas when deciding to buy organic.  For products that you or your children consume on a daily basis, buying organic, if at all possible, is definitely advisable.  When my boys were little, they consumed volumes of milk on a daily basis so this was an product I tried to always buy organic (or at least hormone free).  Think carefully about your overall diet and switch those items that make a daily appearance to organic.

Also, items that are higher up on the food chain like meat are important to buy organic.  Livestock that is fed a conventional diet of corn and other grains have greater exposure to the toxi…

[VIDEO] Trampolining with This Girl Can

Source http://www.thefitbits.com/2016/12/video-trampolining-with-this-girl-can.html

I’m so excited! It’s time to share with you my third video working with Active Sussex as This Girl Can Sussex Ambassador – and this time we went trampolining!

Not just any old trampolining either, we went down to the newly opened Sky High trampoline park in Peacehaven to have a go at BounceFit – a new high intensity, low impact MEGA FUN fitness class that had me sweating out of my eyes and laughing all the way through.

Have a looky at the video and let me know what you think!

BounceFit is on every Monday 7-8pm and Wednesday mornings 10-11am and costs £7.50 per class – a 35 minutes of ‘work’ and the rest of the time is yours for a free bounce!

It’s literally the MOST fun I’ve ever had at a fitness class, (something finally tipping Zumba for the top spot), and because everything you do is on a nice soft, springy trampoline, your joints will love you and you’ll go home grinning like a cat on catnip.

Where else can you so freely go back to being a child?! Come and play… you know you want to!

Can basic biology shed light on Alzheimer’s disease (and receive support for trying…)?

Source: http://www.nia.nih.gov/research/blog/2016/12/can-basic-biology-shed-light-alzheimers-disease-and-receive-support-trying

As most of you probably know, there has been a big influx of funds for Alzheimer’s disease research, with perhaps more to come. We recently issued several new Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) focused on Alzheimer’s. A burning question in the minds of many scientists is: Can a basic biologist not currently working on Alzheimer’s really expect to receive funds targeted towards Alzheimer’s research?…

Celebrate the Season By Being True to Yourself

Lonni, seated, with her sister Mary Allen.

I was a college professor and nurse with my doctorate in education when I started having memory problems that were concerning me. Students had complained of inconsistent homework assignments, and my son Dan noticed that I was repeating myself in our phone conversations. Then one day while giving a speech in Washington D.C. about medical ethics, I totally blanked about where I was and why I was there – in the middle of my speech. That was a major turning point.

This was in 2014, and I was living in North Dakota. My physician acknowledged that she had noticed a change in me as well, and I was referred for neuropsychological testing. After completing those tests and …

For girls who ride: Casquette

Source http://www.thefitbits.com/2016/12/for-girls-who-ride-casquette.html

FitBits | Casquette women's cycling magazine review | Tess Agnew fitness blogger

It’s about time there was a magazine for the lesser spotted MAWIL (middle-aged woman in lycra). Actually, maybe not so middle-aged, and actually not so lesser spotted, if you’re looking in the right places – the general, any-aged, woman in lycra. The GAWIL(?)

The woman (or girl), who appreciates the majesty of fully matching shorts and jersey; or gets her kicks setting off the 30mph speed camera on a wheel-wobbling 45mph downhill descent.

The woman whose quads are a force to be reckoned with, not least because of their hill-climbing skills, but also because of their exquisitely maintained tan lines during the summer.

Rule no. 7, boys and girls. <a href="http://www.ve…
