“Winter is coming”
– House Stark.
Like the White Walkers of the old stories our Gran used to tell us, winter is descending upon us mere mortals, and we must prepare! This endless onslaught of vicious attacks on our brains and our bellies will leave us ripe for slaughter if we’re not careful. What began as celebrations and a time to ‘bring together’ has been corrupted by evil forces:
Holiday parties tell us to embrace our love of engorging ourselves with so much food our belt buckles burst. We stuff ourselves like turkeys being fattened for slaughter. Eep.
Cold weather that encourages us to sleep in, avoid the elements, and say “maybe tomorrow.” A sun that rises too late and sets too soon means we often go days without seeing the damn thing!
These and more challenges are just begging us to go off the rails. And a built-in excuse called January 1st where we promise to “start over” helps us rationalize us acting like an ass until then. Black Friday has come and gone. Cyber Monday is now in the rear view. Thanksgiving is now a distant memory.

Our mother came from Portugal after marrying our father in 1958. She didn’t know anyone and didn’t speak the language. She followed the love of her life and they raised a beautiful family. They taught me the meaning of true love, loyalty and dedication to family and friends.
Our father passed away in 2000, after 42 wonderful years of marriage. Although she had us kids and grandchildren as a distraction, she had a void that none of us could fill. She visited the cemetery every day and cried at the mention of his name.
In 2008, mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and the days, months and years that followed were heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. Very early on she stopped talking about our dad and didn’t recognize his picture. That was a blessing but painful to think …

This workout was created by Nerd Fitness Team Member and Master of the Fitness Universe, Jim Bathurst.
With zombie skeletons pounding at your door, you know what really makes me feel safe? Redundancy! If the wall doesn’t hold, the creatures have to go through metal bars. After that, another line of defense. And then another.
And you know what really makes me stick to my workouts? Redundancy. Multiple lines of defense against my own excuses:
Oh, you know what? It’s just too cold to walk or drive to the gym… “NO PROBLEM,” I tell myself, “I can do the workout right here!”
Oh, but I don’t have the right equipment. I probably need to skip it today… “NO PROBLEM!” All I need is my own bodyweight and a backpack filled with something heavy!
Oh, but the exercises at home aren’t right. They’re [too easy or too hard]… NO PROBLEM! Here are some backup exercises if I need a variation.
Today we give you the Winter is Coming Workout. In case of emergency, break the glass and do this workout instead of skipping the day entirely.</…

“Learn the alchemy true human beings know. The moment you accept what troubles you’ve been given, the door will open.” ~Rumi
As much as I tried to apply personal development ideas in my life, I failed big time.
All the affirmations in the world couldn’t make me love myself.
The more I tried to “be present,” the more all-over-the-place my mind became, getting lost in overthinking.
Mindfulness didn’t work for me either. Observing my thoughts got me to chase each and every thought and analyze it. When I tried “letting go,” I just held on tighter.
This was my experience from reading hundreds of popular self-help books over a ten-year period. I studied intensely as if for a PhD, experimenting with the techniques several hundred such books suggested, but still my life wasn’t working very well, to say the least.
My mind was a storm of thoughts and emotions. Sometimes I had panic attacks, which caused me to spend hours in bed, making me unable to work for stretches of time. I tried various drugs (medical and recreational) and other compuls…

Retreat, Vacation or Both…
When I think of a yoga retreat, I see calm faces on happy bodies sitting in meditation poses in totally serene, tropical surroundings. Vegetarian meals are served family style and eaten in total silence. Morning sun is greeted with a strenuous vinyasa practice, sunset is celebrated with restorative poses and the sound of nature are always present. The participants sleep in cots in shared rooms with community bathrooms and no air conditioning…then I wake up screaming as all my clients run for the nearest door.
The traditional yoga retreat would not go over well for most of our clients at ZenRock, which is why our retreat structure more resembles a vacation in many aspects. We still do yoga twice a day and eat healthy, delicious food prepared by an on-site chef. We meditate and talk about some of the deeper m…

My holiday season kicked off with a bang this week. My family enjoyed an amazing meal with good family friends, my older son returned from college and we spent quality time on a very wet hike on Thanksgiving day. Most of our Thanksgiving meal was lovingly prepared by my friend’s step dad and while it was incredibly yummy, I was beyond stuffed when we finished eating. With all the parties and merriment on the horizon, my goal for the rest of the holiday season is to remember these tips for good digestion that I have adapted from my nutrition program at the Wellspring School of Healing Arts.
- Avoid eating while angry, under stress, or with people you don’t like. Your food will not digest properly if you are angry or upset because your body is stuck in the flight or fight mode. Enjoying your food and being content when you eat allows our bodies to focus on digestion- not be distracted by negative emotions.
- Eat slowly and Chew your food well! Carbohydrate digestion begins in the mouth with the enzyme salivary amylase or ptyalin. Challenge yourself to make a habit of chewing your food until it is all one consistency.
- Practice eating mindfully. Sit down, turn off the T.V, put down your book and avoid unpleasant conversation.
- Eat a variety, Eat Simply. This is not a contradiction. Eat lots of different varieties of food over a day or week, but mak…

Hemp seeds are one of the new darlings of the health food world and when you take a look at their nutritional profile, you understand why. Hemp is known for its ideal concentrations of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids(1-3 ratio) which have the potential to beneficially influence heart disease and improve skin issues. Hemp seeds contain all of the essential and non-essential amino acids making it a complete protein- a perfect vegan protein source. (In fact, 3 tablespoons of hemp seeds contain 11 grams of protein.) They contain GLA (gamma linolenic acid), a building block of anti-inflammatory hormones that can also help reduce menopause symptoms. Hemp seeds are chock full of disease-fighting, plant-based phytonutrients and anti-aging antioxidants such as vitamin E. It also adds vitamins and minerals including Vitamin A, Vitamin D, zinc, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and iron.
People often ask if eating hemp seeds will lead to the same high as smoking marijuana. While the two do come from the same plant, Cannabis Sativa, marijuana is bred to have a high THC level while hemp is bred to contain only trace amounts of THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis sativa. Because hemp lacks the THC, eating hemp seeds will not produce a high.
Hemp seeds have a mild flavor similar to chopped walnuts. They are excellent in both smoothies and baked goods, sprinkled on salads or in yogurt and are often made into a source for vegan…

The dreaded bathroom scale is used most often to monitor fitness level, but, while weight provides handy, frequent feedback, it can also be misleading. For many reasons, body fat testing is usually much more useful. Traditional scales cannot separate weight from fat and muscle, which is problematic since muscle, being denser and more fibrous, weighs more than fat. As a … Read More
