Stop Telling Women to Embrace Their Flaws
Source http://www.niashanks.com/stop-telling-women-embrace-flaws/
“We should embrace our flaws!” is seen as a phrase of empowerment. Don’t look at your physical flaws with disdain — accept them — is what we’re encouraged to do. While the intentions of the “women should embrace their flaws” proponents are good, I protest that it’s time to stop telling women to embrace their flaws.
The reason is quite simple, really: oftentimes physical features being labeled as flaws to be embraced ARE NOT FLAWS IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Let’s look at a common feature typically labeled as a “flaw”: cellulite. There are several prevalent myths about cellulite, and there some important facts you need to know. One, most women have cellulite (estimated 90% or more; men around 10%). Two, while things like strength training and nutrition can help reduce cellulite, it’s not just a symptom of excess body fat; yes, even lean women have cellulite. Three, it is not a “flaw” that needs to be fixed. It’s a normal, common occurrence, damnit.
If you asked me how I “embrace my flaw of cellulite,” I’d respon…

The Hardest Goodbye: A Granddaughter’s Story
Source: http://blog.alz.org/the-hardest-goodbye-a-granddaughters-story/
I was 15 years old when I found out my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. I had heard of it. I knew about it from friends who had grandparents who suffered through it (and I’d seen The Notebook a million times), but nothing can ever prepare you for what comes after the diagnosis.
I tried to convince myself over and over that she would suffer less because there would come a point that she would no longer know that she was sick. But I didn’t realize that she would always suffer. She would suffer in the confusion of not knowing who she was around. She would suffer in the times where she would no longer know how to feed herself, bathe herself, or even walk by herself. And as her family, we would suffer watching the matriarch of our family, someone who was always so strong and who took…

Thanks. Giving.

Thanksgiving is a great reminder to be grateful for the gifts around you. Not the physical gifts, but the infinite beauty tucked into every corner of your life.
But you needn’t wait until the fourth Thursday in November (USA) or the second Monday in October (Canada) to be thankful, or giving.
What if, instead, you take 90 seconds each morning and write down three things for which you are thankful? What will your list look like? How will it shape your day?
And what if each day you focus on contributing beyond yourself in one small way: a hug, a meal, or just a few minutes of your time? How will this daily giving shape your life?

Setting winter training goals
Source http://www.thefitbits.com/2016/11/setting-winter-training-goals.html
Oops. The last post I wrote was about pizza and that was nearly two weeks ago. Bad Tess.
Not doing very well at the whole ‘fitness blogger’ thing at the moment – work’s been busy and my weekends have been packed with fun things like weddings, bonfires and drinks out – which basically means that early morning endorphins have mostly been replaced with paracetamol and junk food.
And what about the evenings, I hear you say? Well, I don’t know about you, but when I’m busy at work and have lots going on in between, I just can’t be arsed with exercise and would rather curl up with a nice hot stew and magazine.
Just realised this is a massive de ja vu -> I wrote practically the same thing exactly this time last year!
So yes… a line has to be drawn somewhere, and I’m doing it now. As we near the end of November and these gorgeous autumn colours turn to grey it’s t…

Recycling: not just a good thing for the environment
Source: http://www.nia.nih.gov/research/blog/2013/08/recycling-not-just-good-thing-environment
As many people know, the federal budget situation in recent years has led to late starts in our annual award process. When we do not know how much money we will have for the year, we don’t make many awards. And as you’d imagine, when we are without a budget, it is hard to develop a payline for the year. One unintended consequence of these delayed starts is that we have made a very large share of our awards towards the end of the federal fiscal year. So our awards are stacked up in September—how do we untangle that traffic jam?…

Tips to Survive the Holiday Party Season
Source http://refineryfitnesspdx.com/tips-to-survive-the-holiday-party-season/
The Holiday season is upon us and for many of us with it comes parties, alcohol and a departure from our normal eating habits! Why is it when it is on a beautiful tray, on a table filled with other treat laden beautiful trays does food I would never consider eating suddenly sound good? (And if I have had a glass of wine, it doesn’t even have to be on a beautiful tray!) With the kick off to the holiday parties on Turkey day next week, these are my ideas to avoid the usual mindless munching.
- Eat before I go: I am going to have a small, protein filled snack about an hour before I have to leave for the party. The protein will keep me full longer and keep me from reaching for high calorie foods just because I am starving.
- Check out all options before filling my plate: Before I take a plate, I am going to look at all the food options in the room and decide which ones will be the best choices. This does not mean I will not have any “treats” but that I am going to decide which ones are really “special” and are worth the indulgence. (Because really, what are the holidays without some “treats”!)
- I am going to fill my plate with healthy choices: I plan to fill my plate with as many fruits, vegetables and other nutrient dense food like shrimp as I can. I plan to skip the dips, cheeses, fried foods and other foods with a high calorie to nutrient ratio. If m…
