Internet Psychology Part I – Why the Best Memes Go Viral

Unless you have been hiding under a rock of late, you’ve seen a social media-spread Internet meme or two; the hilarious, the shocking and the big, fat fails. Finally, the complex science of modelling and investigating our use of Internet memes is beginning to bloom, revealing not only how to make memes go viral and spread like wildfire on social media, but also what memes tell us about human culture both on and offline.

What is a meme?

We aren’t talking about memes in general here, i.e. a central component of cultural evolution expressed in any communicable format that may be passed on through imitation (e.g. a word, phrase, action, video, image, or idea), described by Dawkins as a ‘unit of cultural transmission’.

Can Diet Accelerate the Development of Alzheimer’s Disease?

Source: http://brainblogger.com/2016/05/07/can-diet-accelerate-the-development-of-alzheimers-disease/

The Western diet or the standard American diet has been recognized as one of the most common food diets in the world. An increasing number of studies have shown that it could be connected to an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

The Western diet is generally characterized by increased levels of refined and processed foods, with elevated content of simple sugars such as sucrose and fructose, sodium, saturated fat, and red meat-derived protein, and with decreased levels of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, protein from plants and fiber.

Links to obesity and metabolic diseases

This type of diet has been identified as a leading factor in the development of metabolic and obesity-related diseases such as <a href="http://brainblogger.com/2014/07/09/diabetes-and-alzheimers-disease-whats-the-link/" target="_blan…

Best and Worst of Neuroscience and Neurology – April 2016

Source: http://brainblogger.com/2016/05/08/best-and-worst-of-neuroscience-and-neurology-april-2016/

This article presents a selection of research papers on the subject of neuroscience and neurology published in April. As usual, many new interesting findings were made public this month, and the selection presented here reflects mostly my personal opinion of their importance.

In April, the scientific community marks the birthday of Italian neuroscientist Rita Levi-Montalcini. Together with Stanley Cohen, Levi-Montalcini was a recipient of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for her discovery of nerve growth factor. Rita Levi-Montalcini died in 2012 at the age of 103. Even in the last years of her life she remained very active both professionally and in politics.
