This week, as many students around the globe finally go back to school to meet their peers and teachers in person for the first time since March, it is an honor to announce that our very own Álvaro Fernández Ibáñez has joined the International Advisory Board of SEK Education Group, which runs 9 bilingual IB schools, and a major university, in Spain, France, Ireland and Qatar.

To harness our best selves, “Temper your empathy, train your compassion, and avoid the news”

Source: https://sharpbrains.com/blog/2020/09/01/to-harness-our-best-selves-temper-your-empathy-train-your-compassion-and-avoid-the-news/

In the novel Lord of the Flies, a group of young boys are shipwrecked on an island and eventually turn savagely against each other. The book is a cautionary tale about humanity’s underlying cruelty and the need for civilization to tame our darker impulses—a message that resonates with many people today.

But that’s not what happened to a real-life group of shipwrecked kids in 1965. Unlike the fictional Lord of the Flies characters, they developed a game plan for survival that was cooperative, fun, and peaceful, resulting in…

How COVID-related stress can disrupt your brain circuits and nine tips to prevent it

Source: https://sharpbrains.com/blog/2020/09/03/how-covid-related-stress-can-disrupt-your-brain-circuits-and-tips-to-prevent-it/

COVID-19 has touched each of us somehow. Many now recognize that caring for our mental health is as essential as addressing the virus if we are to emerge stronger, more connected and more resilient.

The Ancient Greeks said “know thyself” to live soundly, but it is only now that we have the technology to start understanding how our individual experiences arise from the complexity of our brains. Gaining understanding of our brain responses offers a window into how mental health symptoms arise, and allows us to mitigate the negative effects of the pandemic on mental health.

At the Stanford Center for Precision Mental Health and Wellness (PMHW), we are looking at cutting-edge techniques to understand how brain circuits make us who we are – and what happens when they go awry.

What’s in a name? Reflections on describing the work we do

Note: This is a blog post with no answers.

Socrates (470-399 B.C.E.) is credited with saying “The beginning of wisdom is the definition of terms.” In my work, this “definition of terms” idea can be expressed in various ways, such as through operational definitions.

(An operational definition is a description of a variable, procedure, process, or action. It often includes an articulation of how that variable, procedure, process, or action will be observed or measured.)

This is certainly an exercise to which my students are accustomed. As part of treatment planning, practicum students are tasked with defining the target behavior identified in their clients’ objectives. Students work to clearly articulate specific aspects of what they will observe in a client—what they see, what they say, how they say it—that indicates the client is practicing or demonstrating the identified behavior. These definitions also include qua…

Empowering Young Adults with Autism for Workplace Success

DALLAS (September 2, 2020) – The Brain Performance Institute at UT Dallas’ Center for BrainHealth established an internship program with 29 Acres, an innovative housing community for young adults with autism, for participants to practice and hone social skills in a remote workplace.

Called the BrainHealth Accelerator Program, this 6-week virtual internship included ongoing coaching that focused on topics such as how to organize, plan for, and lead virtual meetings, how to give and receive feedback, and how to communicate digitally. Five students of 29 Acres’ Transition Academy completed the program over the summer. They worked together to complete a long-term, team-based project that required establishing a YouTube channel, problem-solving how to stream and edit videos, creating and uploading videos, and designing a personal logo for their channel.

Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder involving a wide range of cognitive, emotional, and social function impairments and altered brain structure. Recent findings suggest a continuum approach: that continuous symptoms and psychiatric disorder related traits can be integrated as risk features for the development of the corresponding disorders.
