Numerous research groups are investigating the cellular biochemistry of highly regenerative species such as salamanders and zebrafish. The goal is to find the differences that ensure regrowth of lost tissue rather than the scarring that occurs in mammals. So far, many of these differences appear to involve the continued operation of processes of regulated growth that take place during embryonic development. It is hoped that some of these differences can form a practical basis for regenerative therapies that will allow the safe regrowth of loss limbs and organ tissues.
