The Body is a Network: Cell Signaling in Age-Slowing Interventions

The authors of this open access papers discuss the prominent role of cell signaling in the better known classes of intervention that have been shown to slow aging in worms, flies, and mice. The body is a network in which cells in one tissue influence the behavior of cells in other tissues via the signal molecules and vesicles that they secrete into the circulatory system. This leads to a focus on mimicking these signals, such as in the production of calorie restriction mimetics and exercise mimetics. As an approach to extending healthy life span, this seems likely to be bounded in effectiveness by the present natural …

Not just older adults – everyone lost the tech user interface war

Source https://www.ageinplacetech.com/blog/not-just-older-adults-everyone-lost-tech-user-interface-war

Once upon a time, a new technology user interface was just annoying.   It’s almost quaint to look back at what we complained about – though some of the famous user interface disasters are well-described in a Scientific American article – Windows 8, BMW iDrive, TV remotes.  At some point, the user gets mad. The BMW iDrive example prompted some drivers to turn around and bring the car back to the showroom.  Consider the whining from this site in <a href="https://www.ageinplacetech.com/blog/smar…

4 Reasons to Let Go of the Need to Plan Your Future

“No valid plans for the future can be made by those who have no capacity for living in the now.” ~Alan Watts

I went to college a little bit later in life. Because of that, people often mistakenly believed I was operating on a specific (and somewhat urgent) timetable—as though I was running to catch up with the rest of the people my age.

However, I was already in a career I loved (teaching yoga) that supported me financially. For me, going back to school was mainly about enjoying the process of getting an education without any pressure to get it over and done with.

As it came time for me to graduate, I frequently got asked, “So, what’s next?”

I never quite knew how to answer this question, and to be honest, it always made me a little bit uncomfortable. …

Five New Technology Offerings for Older Adults

Long ago in a city far far away, there was CES 2020.  It was filled with tech from wall-to-wall and bus ride to bus ride.  CES 2020 was a January 2020 nightmare of related products sited at opposite ends of convention space that seemed to span miles in one direction, and up elevators to suites in the opposite direction. What If Your “Overthinking” Is Actually Good for You?

“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.” ~Marcus Aurelius

Overthinking is common. And everyone is asking us to stop it. Articles like these are abundant:

“7 Signs You Are an Overthinker”

“13 Strategies to Stop Overthinking”

“9 Tips to Overcome Overthinking”

The overthinker in me is starting to question the effectiveness of all this well-meaning advice. If it were that easy to stop, there can’t be so much of it still.

I can’t help but wonder if we are looking at overthinking too negatively. Could overthinking be a part of human nature that actually has benefits? Otherwise, wouldn’t evolution have weeded out this useless trait by now?

A Review of Senolytics Biotech Companies

Here I’ll point out a very high level review of the present senolytics biotech companies. These companies are all quite young, focused on various means of selectively destroying the senescent cells that accumulate with age. Animal data from mice shows that these cells are an important contributing cause of aging and age-related disease, as clearing them reverses the progression many aspects of aging and age-related diseases, while also extending life span. Senescent cells exhibit the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), producing a mix of molecules that provoke <a href="https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2016/08/considering-the-…
