The proportion of U.S. children living in poverty, says the USDA, is higher than it was before the Great Recession of 2008 and seems to be increasing, particularly in rural areas and the South.
Overall, nearly 20%—one-fifth—of U.S. children were living in poverty, an increase of more than one million children since 2007.
The percentage for rural children is 23.5%.
More than half (56%) of all US counties have high rates of child poverty.
An astonishing 86% of rural counties in the South have high rates.
Mississippi has the highest prevalence of rural child poverty—82% of counties in that state have child poverty rates of 20% or more.
Poverty is not good for health.
We have a lot of work to do.

Mushrooms are enjoying a resurgence in popularity. Eastern medicine has used mushrooms for hundreds of years to help with a variety of symptoms and ailments but now mainstream culture is recognizing the benefits of this mighty fungi. All types of mushrooms are rich in antioxidants to help reduce inflammation and contain some protein and fiber.  They also contain B vitamins as well as selenium, which helps to support the immune system and prevent damage to cells and tissues. Adding mushrooms to your diet can be a tasty and healthy support to your life. These three types of mushrooms can be particularly helpful.
Reishi mushrooms contain chemicals that seem to have a variety of potentially beneficial effects, including activity against cancer tumors and immune boosting properties. Reishi has also been shown to reduce fatigue and to help with insomnia.
Cordyceps mushrooms have been used to help increase the bodyâs production of a molecule which is essential for delivering energy to the muscles, increasing exercise endurance. They may help with diabetes by keeping blood sugar levels within a healthy range by mimicking the action of insulin. Cordyceps has also been used in Chinese Medicine to help combat stress.

I served as a medic at Andrews AFB in the emergency room of Malcolm Grow Medical Center. There I witnessed considerable physical trauma. I witnessed death on a number of occasions, some violent, some peaceful. I remember the violent ones.
I also served temporary duty (TDY) at Lackland AFB working with airman stationed in Vietnam, presenting with PTSD and substance abuse disorder (SUD). Â As a clinician in Behavioral Health Care, I dealt with folks presenting with multiple psychosocial trauma, including combat Vets from Vietnam.
