Waking Up to Sunshine

image001Family, fitness and faith are all at the center of my being. I was a caregiver for 13 years for two of the most important men in my life – my fathers. Like many caregivers, I experienced the joy and heartbreak of caring for my parents. It was a journey that sometimes made me laugh and sometimes made me cry.

When my father was diagnosed with dementia after suffering from two strokes, I was concerned about his quality of life, so I moved him into my home and hired nurse assistants to help me take care of him. Eventually, God sent me an angel named Lenell Wyatt who moved into my home and took care of my Papa as if he was her Papa.

When “Just Love Your Body” Is Stupid Advice

Source http://www.niashanks.com/love-your-body-stupid-advice/

when love your body is stupid adviceWhen it doesn’t work is the short answer, but there’s more to it.

You should move your body frequently (preferably including strength training as part of this regimen) and eat well because you love your body, not because you hate it.

“Work out because you love your body, not because you hate it,” is a powerful motto every woman should declare with force. I don’t know who said it first, but I credit Molly Galbraith with popularizing it. I’ve witnessed the profound effect it has on women, and experienced it personally. Loving your body and choosing to become the best version of yourself instead of constantly finding something to “fix” about your body is empowering, and provides freedom from self-hatred.

But, sometimes, “just love your body” is stupid advice, and I’ve realized that recently.

More specifically, work out because you love your body and not because you hate it should be considered an achievable goal, not something to add to today’s to-do list that you can check off with ease. It’s a tedious process for many, not a simple mindset change.

This is why I’m a fanati…

Apples & Honey Kale Salad with Black Pepper Toasted Walnuts

Source http://www.sonima.com/food/apples-and-honey-salad/

I always feel tender around the transition of seasons, craving flavors that are simple and soothing rather than the bright, pungent tastes of summer. This kale salad is all of that and more—an easy lunch or accompaniment to dinner that delivers balanced flavor and plant-based fuel.
The apples and honey vinaigrette is ideal for Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) celebrations, as those symbolic foods uniting to usher in sweetness and possibility. Share this salad with friends to initiate a ritual for all the good to come, or take a moment to make it for yourself and reflect on your own most…

How to Deal with Destination Memory Issues – Did I Already Tell You?

Source: http://brainblogger.com/2016/09/16/how-to-deal-with-destination-memory-issues-did-i-already-tell-you/

Have you ever realized or been informed that the person you are talking to has already heard the joke or story you are telling?

I already told your this?

If you have been in this situation, you are not alone. You are dealing with what experts call, destination memory.

Destination memory is the ability to remember to whom you told what. The reason that so many of us have problems with it, is that it has been found to be weaker than other forms of memory regardless of age.

Why is Destination Memory Weaker?

• According to Nigel Gopie and Colin MacLeod, the researchers who coined the term destination memory, we may have more practice and feedback developing other forms of memory like explicit memory, our memory for facts, dates, vocabulary etc. or implicit memory, our memory for riding a bike, driving a car etc. You’ve he…

6 Smart Ways to Avoid Genetically Modified Foods

Source http://www.sonima.com/yoga/genetically-modified-foods/

On July 29th 2016, President Obama signed bill 746 into law requiring that all genetically modified ingredients be labeled on food packaging. This act, (also known as the DARK Act, nicknamed after the phrase Denying Americans the Right to Know) has been criticized for being a disguised means of favoring the interests of agribusiness over consumer information and product transparency. On paper, the act states that it aims to “establish a national mandatory bioengineered food disclosure standard with respect to any bioengineered food and any food that may be bioengineered.” In practice, however, this law will make it much more difficult to obtain information on whether a meal or food product might contain ingredients that are genetically modified. This law also nullifies state-led efforts to more stringently label GMOs, as was the case in Vermont.

Bill 746 tightly regulates the definition of what constitutes a bioengineered food. For example, foods derived from animals fed GMO crops would be exempt from this labeling requirement. Moreover, it may be difficult to label bioengineered animals if they do make it to market, as the methods used to engineer them may fall outside of the scope of the current GMO definition (as of now, salmon is the only genetically modified meat approved for sale, although it has not made it to m…
