Shut down your inner critic that says you your body is not “right” or that you are a bad” person for how you look or what you eat. Replace those negative thoughts with positive ones.  Make a list of affirmations that work for you and refer to it when that negative voice is strong.  Don’t let yourself make statements about you that you would never make to a loved one.  You deserve as much love as your kids, parents and significant other. 

Wear clothes that are comfortable and that make you feel good about your body. If your clothes are too tight or not flattering, you will spend your time worrying about them, making it hard to enjoy life.  buy clothes that fit regardless of the size.  No one sees the size but you!

Become a critical viewer of social and media messages. Pay attention to images, slogans, or attitudes that make you feel bad about yourself or your body.  Remember most of the images have been doctored up or alter in some way to make the person fit the “ideal” image.

Goals are important. Without them, we’d lack the drive and focus to get anything done. Some researchers have even argued that the complexity of human goal-oriented behavior is what differentiates us from other species.

Interestingly, failing to achieve goals is also very human, and, as it turns out, very necessary. When it comes to mastering a new skill, our development is maximized when we try something that is somewhat difficult that results in failure about half of the time. (Who knew?)

However, creating goals that are too far out of reach—or when it comes to health and fitness, are not constructive—can lead to defeat, and ultimately giving up. Learning how to create suitable goals is worth the effort, as it can help you better focus on what you want to achieve and get you there with smaller losses and bigger wins.

Just a few short years ago, I sat across the table from a lovely man on a first date. It had taken a couple months to get there due to our busy schedules, but it seemed to be worth it. He was easy to talk to and seemed like a great guy.

During the course of the evening, we discussed what we were looking for and he told me that he was still married, but his divorce would be final in a few days. While I was disappointed to hear this, I rationalized it. I told myself that at least he was honest about it, and besides, he was almost divorced.

The divorce took place just as he said, and I decided to continue seeing him. What followed was a yearlong very painful, but sometimes fun relationship.

It was on again, off again, and never quite came together. He would decide that he really cared for me and tell me so with tearful declarations, then back away. The last time he ended it was via text message.

While these hacks sound incredible, they typically fall short in delivery.

But there is one simple hack that does work. One simple hack to stop screwing yourself over and, thereby, allowing you to achieve your goals: “If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging,” declares the wisdom of what’s known as The Law of Holes.

Mountain biking on Skye – a highland adventure

We’re just back from an amazing road trip to the Scottish highlands and I’ve got so much to share with you. In this post – the two amazing natural mtb trails on Skye that we rode – our first venture away from the safety and comfort of the trail centres we’re used to.


From the day I learned to ride a bike I’ve always loved cycling. As a kid I’d mostly be found razzing my BMX around the pump track and into town, and at uni my retro Peugeot racer and wicked pink Chopper joined the collection in the hallway of our student house.

Nowadays even though I ride my much-loved Giant road bike more often to commute and get around, it’s mountain biking that has truly captured my heart.

There’s a special kind of freedom in heading into the great outdoors on two wheels – whether sailing cross-country atop the rolling South Downs, or throwing yourself down some nice flowy singletrack in the Surrey Hills, Wales or Scotland – mountain biking is the one.

But which is best for that singletrack fix? Trail centre or natural?
