Riding Harleys to Help End Alzheimer’s

Source: http://blog.alz.org/riding-harleys-to-help-end-alzheimers/

My sister Rose first got in touch with the Alzheimer’s Association about three years ago on behalf of our mother. Since then, and the organization and local chapter has helped my family in so many ways. Today we give back by once again participating in The Longest Day, a sunrise-to-sunset event that symbolizes the challenging journey of those living with the disease and their caregivers.2014_TLD_Denver_MotorcycleRide_0855 (1)

Years ago, when Rose and I first talked about how we could raise money for the cause, we decided to organize a motorcycle “poker run.” We ride our motorcycles to specific checkpoints and draw a playing card at each one, the object being to have the best pok…

Glioblastoma – Can Gene Therapy Really Help?

Source: http://brainblogger.com/2016/06/14/glioblastoma-can-gene-therapy-really-help/

Glioblastoma is one of the deadliest tumours, with very low survival rate and no efficient therapies available. The current gold standards of management, namely surgery, chemo- and radiotherapy, have little effectiveness since these tumours typically exhibit very aggressive recurrences within a short time frame. In spite of concerted international efforts over the past few decades, an effective treatment for these tumours has remained elusive.

It is sad but true that a diagnosis of glioblastoma is almost equivalent to a death sentence, and most patients who have been diagnosed with a WHO grade IV malignant glioma survive only about 12 months. Although new molecular pathways involved in glioblastoma invasiveness are constantly being uncovered, translation of basic science research into clinical applications has been slow. Additionally, despite advances in tr…

Light Amid the Darkness

Source: http://blog.alz.org/light-amid-the-darkness/

My graduate school commencement ceremony was fast approaching, and I knew it would be next to impossible for my dad to attend.  My dad, who is in his 80s, is living with Alzheimer’s disease.

Just the drive to and from the school would be a challenge for him, so I made arrangements for the assisted living facility to live stream the ceremony. Little did I know, my family had other plans in mind. My mom had asked the assisted living health coordinator if my dad would be able to make it to Emory & Henry and back. She said, “Yes!” and the entire staff was let in on the plan. The big surprise was underway.

The day of graduation I got there early with my mom. We were able to save seats and still have a good view of the stage. As we were counting the seats, I noticed my mom had counted one extra. I asked her why, thinking maybe my cousin might be coming.  Mom fought back tears and replied, “Your father.”<img class="size-medium wp-image-4812 alignright" src…

Best and Worst of Neuroscience and Neurology – May 2016

Source: http://brainblogger.com/2016/06/18/best-and-worst-of-neuroscience-and-neurology-may-2016/

The last month, in my opinion, was particularly fruitful for new, interesting publications. In fact, I was struggling when deciding which of them to select for this review. Quite a few articles addressed fundamental questions about basic mechanisms of brain functioning, neurodegenerative diseases and evolution. Several important discoveries were made on new applications and treatments with existing drugs. Some medicines were shown to have unexpected side effects.

Although I couldn’t cover everything important in this review, I’ll address the most interesting topics in the follow-up weekly articles.

In May, the scientific community marked the birthday of Sidney Altman, 1989 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. Dr Altman has discovered catalytic properties of RNA. The discovery not only changed how we view this essential molecule of life in evolutionary terms, but also attracted enormous and ever-growing interest to the multiple functions of RNA in human body, both in norm…
