Why I Chose Men Who Hurt and Abandoned Me

Loss is never an easy experience. However, it is a part of life, so we need to accept it and find ways to cope with it in order to keep moving forward.

Whether someone dies or chooses to end a relationship, loss hurts and can leave us feeling abandoned and potentially leave deep wounds and scars.

I recently read something that suggested abandonment is a type of trauma, and it can cause symptoms similar to PTSD when the abandonment issues from our past are triggered in the present. When those emotions are triggered, we go into fight-or-flight mode.

The Subtle Power of Changing Your Identity

One of the most powerful switches I ever made when changing my entire life was switching up my identity.

And while I never did it overnight, I successfully did it in multiple areas:

  • I changed from a smoker to a non-smoker — and once I did, I stopped thinking of smoking as something to do when I was stressed.
  • I went from meat-eater to vegetarian (and later to vegan). It literally took meat off the menu for me, so that I didn’t even consider eating it.
  • I thought of myself as a marathoner. Later, as just someone who exercises regularly to stay fit and healthy. It meant that there was no question I was going to exercise, even if I fell out of it for a bit because of disruptions.
  • I became a meditator (and later Zen student). That means even if I stop meditating for a little bit, I’ll always come back to it.
  • I became a writer. Sure, before this change, I di…

Empowering Young Adults with Autism for Workplace Success

DALLAS (September 2, 2020) – The Brain Performance Institute at UT Dallas’ Center for BrainHealth established an internship program with 29 Acres, an innovative housing community for young adults with autism, for participants to practice and hone social skills in a remote workplace.

Called the BrainHealth Accelerator Program, this 6-week virtual internship included ongoing coaching that focused on topics such as how to organize, plan for, and lead virtual meetings, how to give and receive feedback, and how to communicate digitally. Five students of 29 Acres’ Transition Academy completed the program over the summer. They worked together to complete a long-term, team-based project that required establishing a YouTube channel, problem-solving how to stream and edit videos, creating and uploading videos, and designing a personal logo for their channel.
