Speculating on Involvement of SIRT1 and SIRT3 in the Aging of the Heart
In today’s research materials, scientists demonstrate that the combination of reduced SIRT1 and SIRT3 causes weakness in heart muscle via disruption of mitochondrial function. Mitochondria are the power plants of the cell, a herd of hundreds of bacteria-like organelles that are responsible for producing the chemical energy store molecule adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to power cellular operations. Impairment of mitochondrial function thus results in impaired cell function, a characteristic change observed in old tissues. Mitochondrial dynamics, the balance of fusion and <a href="h…

“I thought it was crazy at first when my coach told me to start eating more, when my goal was to lose weight.
But then I tried it. And it worked.
‘Reverse dieting’ actually helped me lose the last few stubborn pounds.”
This is Megan, a member of Nerd Fitness Coaching who is celebrating hitting her goal weight.
What’s so interesting about her story is how she did it.
Megan’s coach saw that she was hitting a wall with her lower-calorie diet.
Instead of continuing, Coach Evan proposed they try something different: eat more.

Engineering Chimeric Antigen Receptor T Cells to Activate Only When Ultrasound Energy is Applied
Providing a patient’s T cells with a receptor to match the surface characteristics of the patient’s cancer cells is proving to work quite well for some types of cancer. Unfortunately the match is never perfectly specific for cancerous cells, and chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR-T cells) can do a lot of damage to healthy tissue in many of the desired scenarios for treatment. Researchers here report on one of a number of presently explored approaches to limit the activation of CAR-T cells to only the cancerous tissue of interest, thereby making the therapy more viable.

The Grief We Can’t Run from and Why We Should Embrace It
Source http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/tinybuddha/~3/GEWdh9mZn80/

“I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.” ~J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King
Grief creeps up on you when you least expect it. It reminds you of the person you have lost when you’re out for coffee with friends, watching people hug their loved ones goodbye at the airport, and when you’re at home thinking about people you should call to check-in on.
Even when you think that enough time has passed for you to be over it, grief pulls at your heartstrings. You think about all the ways that life has changed, and your heart longs to have one last conversation with the person you have lost, one last hug, and one last shared memory.
A wise person once told me that when you love someone the hurt neve…

What’s the Difference Between Black and White Pepper?
Source https://greatist.com/eat/whats-the-difference-between-black-and-white-pepper
Black and white peppercorns are both the fruit of the pepper plant, but they are processed differently. Black peppercorns are picked when almost ripe and sun-dried, turning the outer layer black. To produce white peppercorns, this outer layer is removed before or after drying, leaving only the inner seed.

White pepper tastes hotter than black but is less complex, with fewer flavor notes. High-quality peppercorns of either type are more aromatic and have more floral, spice, and fruit notes than generic ones. Candy recommends the punge…
