The World Is Not My Enemy – Why I’m Trying to Let My Guard Down

“Vulnerability is the core, the heart, the centre of meaningful human experiences” ~Brené Brown

From a young age I learned that the world is not a safe place—that there are bullies out there that want to harm me and that I have to watch my back. I developed defense mechanisms in order to protect myself, or perhaps those mechanisms had been there all along, programmed into my psychology by millions of years of evolution.

Maybe these mechanisms served me in certain situations as they did my ancestors; telling me when to fight and when to run away. But as I got older, I began to see how these mechanisms would often kick into gear when I didn’t want or need them to. Sometimes I would fight when there was no need to fight. Other times I would be afraid and hide when I was…

Pump, Pump, Pump It Up! The 10 Best Pre-Workout Supplements for Women

Source https://greatist.com/fitness/best-pre-workout-for-women

We use “men’s” and “women’s” in this article to align with how products are sold on retail sites. But your gender identity may not align with how the products are marketed. Choose the product with the features that work best for you!

So you’re ready to take your sweat sessions to the next level with a pre-workout supplement. Sweet! The catch? There are about a million of these boosters on store shelves, and a lot of them have oddly aggressive packaging that might make you wonder if you’re even shopping for the right thing.

The truth is, women don’t necessarily need a specially branded pre-workout supplement. The best ones will work well for all bodies. (One less thing to think about when you shop — NICE.)

Here are the best 10 options to help you reach your fitness goals A-S-A-P.

Telomerase and Follistatin Gene Therapies Delivered via Cytomegalovirus Extend Life in Mice

Source https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2021/07/telomerase-and-follistatin-gene-therapies-delivered-via-cytomegalovirus-extend-life-in-mice/

Upregulation of telomerase expression and, separately, follistatin expression have been shown to extend life in mice. In recent news, researchers report a novel approach to delivering these two genes via gene therapy, making use of cytomegalovirus (CMV) as a vector. CMV is actually a major threat to human health, and might be responsible for a great deal of the age-related decline of the immune system. Near everyone is infected by the time old age rolls around. Overactive Monocytes and Macrophages Contribute to the Onset of Alzheimer's Disease

Source https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2021/07/overactive-monocytes-and-macrophages-contribute-to-the-onset-of-alzheimers-disease/

There is an increasing focus in the research community on the role of chronic inflammation in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. With age, the background level of inflammatory signaling rises as the immune system constantly responds to signs of damage and dysfunction. Immune cells become overactive. In the case of the innate immune cells known as monocytes, that give rise to macrophages, an inflammatory background shifts their focus away from supporting processes of regeneration and tissue maintenance, and into a more aggressive and inflammatory state. This has detriment…

Repaving Memory Lane: Why Can’t I Remember My Childhood?

Source https://greatist.com/live/why-cant-i-remember-my-childhood

Many people can recall happy childhood memories: playing with friends during recess, birthday parties, that time you accidentally set fire to your parents’ living room (don’t worry — we’ve all been there). But it’s also pretty common to find that you don’t remember much about being a kid.

Is it normal that I can’t remember my childhood?

The good news is that it’s completely normal not to remember much of your early years. It’s known as infantile amnesia. This means that even though kids’ brains are like little sponges, soaking in all that info and experience, you might take relatively few memories of it into adulthood.

It doesn’t mean you’ve got a problem with your memory or that you repressed memories of ch…

How My Son Taught Me That Crying Can Boost My Mental Health

“And some days life is just hard. And some days are just rough. And some days you just gotta cry before you move forward. And all of that is okay.” ~Unknown

Over the years I’ve built myself a bit of a reputation as “the emotional one.”

I was always the first to cry at weddings, and that included my own. At that one I barely stopped throughout the ceremony! And as soon as I’m beyond the half-way point of any good holiday, it’s inevitable that a pretty epic sob is waiting in the wings.

At this point I should probably mention that I’m a forty-three-year-old male. I also live in the UK, a country that’s proud of its “Bulldog spirit” and “stiff upper lip.” What this really means is that we’re a country where many people are uncomfortable wi…
