4 Ways to Get Your Female Clients to Strength Train For Real

As a fitness professional, your main duty is to deliver amazing results for your clients, no matter who they are or their goal. And sometimes a client may be someone who initially balks at the idea of picking up heavy weights, but still wants to have a strong body. In my experience, these clients are more commonly women, though please bear in mind I am not saying this hesitation is unique to females.
Understandably, even in this day and age, preconceived notions of the weight room culture and weightlifting in general still dominate. We’ve made a lot of strides forward in getting more women into weightlifting, powerlifting, and bodybuilding since Arnold’s heyday. That’s because some women will jump right in, ready to take on new challenges, while others may take extra time and convincing to feel more comfortable.
For the latter group, I’ve successfully applied what I’m about to discuss with you toward introducing and transitioning many of my female athletes, including my fiancé, to the barbell and other weights. Here’s what you can do.

As we move towards the end of summer, I am loving the bounty of the summer fruits and vegetables. No fruit says summer more to me than tomatoes. I love that you can have a single bush on your back porch and be overwhelmed with yummy goodness. As well as being tasty, tomatoes also offer a wealth of health benefits.
They are a rich source of the antioxidant lycopene which is important for bone and eye health. Bright, fresh tomatoes and tomato extracts have also been shown to be important for heart health because they help lower LDL, cholesterol, and triglycerides. Their antioxidants have been found to reduce the risk of prostate, breast, pancreatic and lung cancer. Diets that include tomatoes have also been linked with reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease in multiple studies. One tomato provides 40% of your daily need for Vitamin C, an important antioxidant and their Vitamin A improves vision, as well as prevents night-blindness and macular degeneration. Tomatoes also are a rich source of fiber which helps maintain regularity. These are just a few of the many health benefits of these multi-colored fruits.
When shopping for tomatoes look for ones that are brightest, deepest colors you can find. Tomatoes of all colors have amazing health benefits so enjoy. I have included a recipe for Homemade Roasted Soup below.

Food products with health claims: only marginally better (no surprise)

A recent study did something useful. It examined the nutritional quality of more than 2000 foods with or without health-related claims.
As compared with food products without health claims, foods with health claims had, on average, per serving:
- 29 fewer calories
- 3 grams less sugar
- 2 grams less saturated fat
- 842 mg less sodium
- 0.8 grams more fiber
The authors conclude:
Foods carrying health-related claims have marginally better nutrition profiles than those that do not carry claims…It is unclear whether these relatively small differences have significant impacts on health.
Unclear? Most of these are barely measurable. Only the sodium reduction might help.
This study confirms the following:
- Health claims on food packages are not about health; they are about marketing.
- Just because a food product is slightly better for you does not necessarily mean that it is a good choice.

“At McDonald’s we’re on a journey: What’s important to you is important to us.”
The ad says McDonald’s is taking these actions [with my comments]:
- Removed artificial preservatives from Chicken McNuggets and other items [Fine, but no big deal in my book.]
- Removed high fructose corn syrup from hamburger buns [And replaced it with what? Sugar? This matters? I’m guessing the price of HFCS must be close enough to the price of sugar to make this possible.]**
- Committed to only source chickens that have not been treated with antibiotics [OK. Now we’re talking important. For this alone, McDonald’s deserves high praise. My only question: by when?]***
The ad also summarizes the company’s additional actions, done and promised:
- Burgers are 100% beef
- Eggs are freshly cracked
- Salads feature baby spinach, kale, Tuscan red lea…
