I never realized how much stuff was involved in a typical holiday until I had a daughter.
During her first real Christmas (she was born about a week before Christmas, so that one doesn’t count), she received more presents than the rest of my family combined.
Easily.
Toys, books, dolls, blocks, clothes, bikes…
You name it, it was probably under my tree for her to open.

I’ve been seeing lots of books about meat lately. Here are two recent ones.
Josh Berson. The Meat Question: Animals, Humans, and the Deep History of Food. MIT Press, 2019.
The author is an Australian social scientist, a vegan, who has produced a deep dive into the history of the use of meat as food and as cultural symbol. As he puts it,
The aim of this book is to unpack what I’ve come to call the Meat Question–Should humans be eating meat, and if so who, and what kinds, and how much?–in the most comprehensive way possible. The perspective…is deep deep in that it encompasses the history of human meat eating and human relationships with other gregarious vertebrates over a span of mor…

I’ve found that there are two profound changes that almost any of of us can make:
Become kinder to ourselves
Build trust in ourselves
Unfortunately, because we don’t really trust ourselves, we’re very rarely kind to ourselves.
When I ask people to start being kind to themselves, they usually come back at some point with this dilemma:
“But if I’m too kind to myself, I won’t get anything done!”
This is the fear, when people start being kind to themselves — that they’ll be too soft, they won’t get stuff done, they’ll let themselves off the hook too easily, they’ll just lie around doing nothing.
It’s an understandable fear — if you have had times when you procrastinated, you probably worry about this.
Let’s talk about why kindness to self is so important, how to do it, and how to still get stuff done even wh…

My first response to the unretouched photos was colored by my inner ageist. I felt exposed, vulnerable and unmasked, with my 76 year old skin photographed close-up and very personal. My inner ageist dislikes the skin changes that appear with aging. My inner activist loves them. Many times I don’t live up to my own expectations when confronting ageism

Medication non-adherence – it’s serious. This medication non-adherence (not filling prescriptions or missing dosages) is a major health issue – resulting in 10% of hospitalizations, 125,000 deaths, and costing the healthcare system up to $300 billion/year. Consider that 1 in 5 Medicare patients are re-admitted to the hospital within 30 days after discharge – half of them because of medication non-adherence. In a study by Walgreens, resear…

I guest-edited a series of papers on SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, for the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH). The papers are now online and will be in print in the December issue of the journal.
AJPH SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
Marion Nestle, PhD, MPH, served as Guest Editor for the special section: “AJPH Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program.” M. Nestle oversaw peer review for the articles, provided input on peer reviewer selection and peer review evaluation, suggested which articles would appear in the special section, and wrote the lead Commentary.
