Expression of the klotho gene declines with age, while approaches that increase levels of the klotho protein have been demonstrated to slow aging in mice. Some fraction of this outcome stems from increased activity of the cellular housekeeping processes of autophagy, responsible for recycling metabolic waste and damaged molecular machinery and cellular components. Many of the methods of modestly slowing aging in laboratory species are characterized by upregulated autophagy, and some, such as calorie restriction, require functional autophagy in order to slow aging.

“You don’t need strength to let go of something. What you really need is understanding.” ~Guy Finley
I used to be married to a very kind man with similar values and goals in life. So why did we end up divorced?
In one word? Communication.
Like so many other highly sensitive people (HSPs) I thrived on meaningful, deep communication. I lived for it. I sought it out. And, when at ease, I was good at it.
Unless he wasn’t. Which was often. When he was shut down, couldn’t articulate what was going on for him, or had nothing to say in response to my openhearted sharing, then I’d get weird in my communications.

It took a long time and many failed attempts for the research community to get to the point at which amyloid-β could be successfully cleared from the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. Unfortunately, the data to date strongly suggests that this isn’t an effective approach to therapy, at least not on its own, even though it is clearly the case that the increased levels of amyloid-β in the aging brain should be removed. It is a characteristic difference between old brain tissue and young brain tissue, and there is plenty of evidence for it to be harmful.
This failure to achieve clinical success may be because amyloid-β aggregation ceases to be an important factor in later stage disease, once <a href="https://en.wiki…

“Emotional pain cannot kill you, but running from it can. Allow. Embrace. Let yourself feel. Let yourself heal.” ~Vironika Tugaleva
Ah, therapy, my old friend. We meet again.
I really thought I’d released you from my life; that I no longer needed your help to maintain my sanity.
Boy, was I wrong.
Third time’s a charm, as they say.
The First Time I Went to Therapy
I was eighteen when I had my first encounter with therapy; my parents had just divorced under pretty devastating circumstances, and, at the same time, my first serious relationship crumbled at my feet.
It was a double betrayal.

I am a great believer in the value of organic production methods, which avoid the most toxic pesticides and herbicides, are demonstrably better for soil, and produce fewer greenhouse gases.
But I wish the organic industry would try to find a less conflicted, more objective way of conducting studies on organic foods.

I’ve come to realize that smart people are very good at creating super persuasive arguments for why the shouldn’t do the thing they’re fearing doing.
This past week, I’ve worked with half a dozen intelligent people who have convinced themselves to give in to their resistance, over and over.
They’re persuasive, convincing people, and when it comes to convincing themselves, they are really good at it, as there isn’t even anyone to argue back.
So they convince themselves, in the moment of fear and resistance, not to do the thing they told themselves yesterday they want to do. This results in not sticking to their word to themselves, not doing the habits they want, not doing the important, meaningful work they’ve always wanted to do.
So how do we overcome our own persuasive rationalizations? I’ve learned a few things working with these wonderful and intelligent…
