Although most people know me as a runner, when I first got into fitness in college, my measure of success wasn’t miles — it was muscle.

LyGenesis is the company founded to develop the technique of implanting organoid tissue into lymph nodes in order to allow it to survive and grow in the body. Some organs can carry out much or all of their function more or less regardless of location in the body, such as the liver and thymus. Thus any viable transplant strategy that leads to functional tissue thriving in the body should help patients. LyGenesis is initially focused on restoring liver function via this approach, but the thymus is next in line, with an eye to reversing some of the age-related decline in immune function.

Hypertension, chronically raised blood pressure, is very damaging. It is an important mechanism by which low-level molecular damage and disarray in aging is converted into structural damage to important tissues in the brain, kidneys, and other organs. It is so influential in aging that lowering of raised blood pressure reduces mortality and disease risk even without addressing the underlying causes of the condition. Obesity is well known to cause raised blood pressure, and researchers here identify a novel mechanism for this effect involving leptin signaling. Since leptin signaling does change with age, it will be interesting to see whether or not this mechanism also operates to a significant degree in the…

There’s nothing like a bowl of comforting minestrone soup. Here it’s made with fresh ingredients to lighten up the recipe, provide important nutrients, and keep you satisfied.

Detoxifying arugula and daikon radish support liver health, while white beans add a dose of protein and fiber to keep you full long after you finish a bowl. But the best part of this recipe is the leeks. These vegetables are a member of the onion family, and they look like extra-large scallions with a white base and green tips. Leeks are wonderful for digestion and full of flavor and fiber, so be sure to use them rather than regular onions.

Meat Alternative:
Two sliced hardboiled eggs, added right before serving. Place two eggs in a small pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from the heat, drain, and rinse with cold water, then peel and slice.
