This blog is going to kick off our series on Core Values. Recently much of our writing has been less about “fitness” and more about achieving long term success in fitness and in life. Can You Challenge Yourself To Master The Uncomfortable?

Yoga is about finding a balance between the comfortable and the uncomfortable.

Do you struggle with a specific posture in your yoga practice? When I first started practicing yoga back in 2014, I was terribly afraid of crow pose. I could not balance myself on my hands. Crow pose was hard and uncomfortable and scary at the same time. I was so afraid that I was going to fall flat on my face each time I lifted my feet off from the floor.

That fear of falling on my face made me seriously uncomfortable when we were asked to do crow pose in our yoga classes.  However, I was someone who loved challenges. I wanted to do crow pose so badly! So I decided to master the uncomfortable. I practiced crow diligently in each and every single one of my yoga classes. After a few months I was able to lift both my feet off from the ground! I was so happy!

Then, I decided to become a certified yoga instructor. I pursued the 200-hour yoga teacher training in 2015. And during my teacher training, I was asked to teach a whole class of beginners how to do crow pose! I was so nervous because my crow was not perfect. And even though I was told that my crow didn’t have to be perfect for me to teach people how to do crow, I wanted to be able to hold crow pose for at least 5 seconds.

Ready to ride: BHF London to Brighton off roader

You may have seen over the past few weeks I’ve been getting a regular dose of the green stuff out on the wheels, and it’s not been without good reason.

Tomorrow morning (bloody bright and early, I might add – need to get to bed basically right now), me and Chris will be joining a bunch of riders from the Brighton MTB FB group in a minibus to the startline of the British Heart Foundation London to Brighton off road ride.

We’ll be riding 75 miles of hills, trails and tracks on our trusty Specialized hardtails, fuelled by a cocktail of flapjacks, electrolytes and (hopefully) smiles.

I’ve finally decided to listen to everyone’s advice and take the hardtail over the full sus as it’s a better bike for the job – quicker, lighter (hopefully, haven’t actually checked and not going to for fear of further indec…

Talk about an Origin Story straight out of a comic book!

At 330 lbs, Joe was unemployed and a highschool dropout. Living rent-free with his grandfather, Joe would sleep all day and wake up at the start of the evening. Having grown up with unhealthy habits, Joe says he’d been binge-eating as long as he can remember. He developed a hypothyroid issue as a teen, and hadn’t bothered to take care of it.

Many of us feel trapped by our situations, and so we do what Joe did for years. Instead of using this as an impetus to change, we make ourselves feel better by falling even deeper into these negative habits. Joe says he would eat “entire loaves of bread with peanut butter or entire 2 pound boxes of chicken fingers” at night. “I’d have to use two baking trays to make them all. I’d stay up until 5-7am watching Turner Classic Movies or Buffy. Sometimes I had the energy to play videogames.”

He wasn’t taking care of himself physically, or mentally. Things felt dire: “Every night I went to bed thinking/hoping I’d die. I was a total wreck. It’s hard to remember.”

But – spoiler alert – Joe turned things around. This is a Nerd Fitness success story after all!

This is the key to any successful and dramatic physique transformation. Let me explain…

Where you are now, is your comfort zone. Your health and fitness goals are where you want to be.

So by definition, your goals are outside of your comfort zone – if they weren’t, then you’d have accomplished them by now…

Which means that in order to achieve the body you want (or any other worthwhile goal in your life) you’re going to have to venture outside of that safe, warm, cozy comfort zone and experience some discomfort.

When it comes to a fitter, more toned body, it means you’ll have to experience the discomfort of hunger from time to time… it means you’ll have to push yourself in your workouts, and keep pushing even when your muscles are burning and crying for rest.

… It means you’ll have to follow your nutrition plan – even on the days you feel like eating pizza and ice cream (or whatever your “sinful” indulgence is).

… And it means you’ll have to adapt and reasses when things don’t go according to plan or life throws a curveball at you to see if you’re paying attention.

Getting uncomfortable is what makes us grow. It’s what makes us change for the better. So the sooner you come to terms with it, the sooner you’ll have that rocki…
