How to Use Silence to Help Your Hurting Friend

There’s a time for words and a time for silence. Thankfully, when I went through one of the darkest periods of my life, I had friends who knew what time it was.

When things go well, your friends don’t usually need to show up in silence. But everything changes when you go through a season of intense pain and disappointment. I know this from firsthand experience.

My life took a drastic turn for the worse when the first ride of the season on our motorcycle ended abruptly. A driver who should have stopped and waited turned left onto the highway, right in front of us. In that moment, we met a world of hurt.

After the initial crash, which I barely survived, I experienced incredible peace and gratitude. I was in a great deal of pain, but I found myself grateful for my family, the excellent care I was receiving, and hope for a better future.

In the early days of repair and recovery, I appreciated the friends and family who came to visit. I enjoyed hearing their news and talking about my journey. I read, with gratitude, the cards that were filled with words of encouragement and love.

Bone broth has become so popular these days that the bones used to make it are getting harder — and more expensive — for broth retailers to source.

With bone broth mania sweeping parts of the U.S. (we see you, LA), cheap bones are harder to come by. Some broth makers are moving away from the standard beef and chicken to new bones — like alpaca.

Women who fail to achieve results from strength training usually fit into one of five categories. Pay attention to these common mistakes and discover where you may fall, and the corrections to make.

The “I’m going to do ALL THE THINGS” trainee

Here’s how a conversation with this type of trainee usually goes. She says something like, “The program isn’t working because I’m not getting stronger,” to which I respond: “Tell me all the activity you’ve done for the past three weeks.”

A response I’ve received is, “I’m doing the three strength training workouts each week from the Minimalist Weight Training Routine but added some extra exercises, HIIT, or barbell complexes at the end to burn more calories. And I decided to start training for a 5k two weeks ago, so I’m running a few days per week. I occasionally go to the local CrossFit gym for the WODs. Oh, and I love to push the Prowler too.”

The program most certainly isn’t the problem. It’s the surplus of intense activity being piled on top of it and the trainee is not recovering. That is why she’s not making progress.
