Five examples of use of AI in the care of older adults

AI use in care delivery and marketing is not new – it just seems that way. Most would agree: AI is the hottest segment in the technology market today. It is beginning to emerge even in market segments that may have been slow to see (or seize) the opportunity. In healthcare, there are research reports and predictions, though adoption has been slow. AI is more established in marketing, even in senior-related businesses. Mo…

Cellular Senescence in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Source https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2023/03/cellular-senescence-in-idiopathic-pulmonary-fibrosis/

This review paper goes into some detail regarding present thought on the role of senescent cells of different types in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Fibrosis in general is an often age-related dysfunction of normal tissue maintenance and regeneration, in which excessive extracellular matrix is created, leading to scar-like deposits that disrupt normal tissue structure and function. In the lung, this progressively impairs breathing and is ultimately fatal. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis was one of the first conditions for which early senolytic drugs to clear senescent cells were tested in humans.

How I Found Hope in my Father’s Terminal Cancer

“Without realizing it, the individual composes his life according to the laws of beauty, even in times of greatest distress.” ~Milan Kundera

When my father received a terminal cancer diagnosis, I went through a wave of different emotions. Fear, anger, sadness. It opened a completely new dictionary that I had not had access to before. A realm of experiences, thoughts, and emotions that lie at the very bedrock of human life was suddenly revealed to me.

After the initial horror and dread at hearing the news had subsided, I was surprised to find a new sense of meaning and connection in the world around me.

In part, dealing with this news has been profoundly lonely. But the truth is, cancer is a huma…

Complicating the Relationship Between Cellular Senescence and Late Life Depression

Source https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2023/03/complicating-the-relationship-between-cellular-senescence-and-late-life-depression/

Inflammatory signaling may be influential in major depressive disorder. For any condition in which inflammation is important, attention should be given to the possible role of cellular senescence, given the advent of senolytic therapies to clear these cells. Senescent cells grow in number throughout the body with age, and while never a large fraction of all cells, they energetically generate pro-inflammatory signals. Here, researchers discuss the sometimes there, sometimes not correlation between burden of senescent cells and incidence of major depress…

Poor information hobbles market perceptions about older adults

Source https://www.ageinplacetech.com/blog/poor-information-hobbles-market-perceptions-about-older-adults

Even Bing and ChatGPT have lousy answers. In fact, as lives lengthen, data about aging individuals dwindles inversely. Don’t believe it? Start searching for recently surveyed data about individuals aged 75+. Use the usual searches for income, marital status, housing status, tech ownership.  Go ahead – give Bing and ChatGPT a try too – for example, smartphone ownership in the US among those aged 75+.  Data returned was from 2017, with an apology that nothing more recent was available. You would think this was an easy question — Bing knew it  and was sorry about the lack of current info, which none of the other usual sources have either.

Workaholics: Why Staying Busy Feels Safe and How It Takes a Toll

“The ego desperately wants safety. The soul wants to live. The truth is, we cannot lead a real life without risk. We do not develop depth without pain.” ~Carol S. Pearson

Workaholism is the body’s wisdom in action, literally.

Some people develop workaholic tendencies because they crave to be seen as the best through their accomplishments.

But I’m not here to talk about people who’re obsessed over their image.

The particular strain of “workaholism” that isn’t talked about enough is a perfectionist’s addiction to productivity.
