Fuel Up

Source http://nextlevelfitness.com/week-1/

Ok, so it took me a week to get the blog set up.  I made the decision to send out my “wake up” email and start my blog on the spur of the moment (and then informed my website guy after the fact).  Apparently it’s more complicated than pushing a button.  This is why I should stick to training and writing and leave the IT difficulties to the professionals.

Anyway…I’ll start with a recap of the last 10 days and go from there.

Fuel.   It’s the hardest part of the equation.  I find it extremely difficult to make good dietary decisions if I’m flying by the seat of my pants.  In my experience that’s pretty much true across the board for most people.  Maybe not you; maybe you can make good decisions on the spur of the moment when you’re hungry.  Not me, I have to plan in advance.  This week I’ve been eating rotisserie chicken and a wild rice/quinoa mixture for lunch.  Easy. Simple.  To keep it lively I need a little hot sauce.

So….today my challenge for you is to plan out your eating schedule for tomorrow.  If you have a plan, you will make better decisions.

Catching up on soda politics

Source http://www.foodpolitics.com/2016/08/catching-up-on-soda-politics/

My book, Soda Politics, came out not quite a year ago but so much has happened since then that it’s been hard to keep up with everything that’s happening in campaigns to discourage consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages.

Fortunately, Healthy Food America’s Casey Hinds puts out a daily roundup of sugar and soda news (you can sign up for it and HFA’s other materials here).

A few recent items of particular interest:

USA Today’s editorial, “soda taxes fall flat

More effective ways already are being used to change people’s diets. The best use of government authority is to empower people with the information they need to make healthier choices.

The editorial comes with a poll, still up.  You can vote on it here.  At this moment only 183 votes have come in, 51% strongly in favor of the editorial opinion.

Five Steps To a More Sustainable Life

Source http://refineryfitnesspdx.com/five-steps-to-a-more-sustainable-life/

  1. Eat Seasonally:  Eating food that is currently in season for your part of the world helps to reduce pollution.  When you live in the Pacific Northwest and buy a nectarine in the middle of January, you can be sure it was not grown locally.  Food that travels a long way  requires more energy and has a greater impact on the environment before it reaches your plate.  Also, because it must travel so far, it is often picked when it is not ripe leading to a less than fresh taste.
  2. Ditch the Plastic Water Bottles:  Bottled water causes a whole host of problems.  Americans consume over 1500 bottles of water every second.  These bottles are clogging our landfills because only a small percentage of them are recycled.  The plastic in the bottles has also been found to leach harmful endocrine disrupting chemicals into the water and bottled water cost significantly more than tap water.  Buy yourself an inexpensive water filter, save significant dollars at the grocery store and avoid exposing yourself to harmful chemicals.
  3. Reduce Your Meat Consumption:  Meat can be an important part of a meal but reducing your overall meat consumption can have a big impact on the environment. I…

Mountain biking in Wales – a tour of the trails

Source http://www.thefitbits.com/2016/08/mountain-biking-in-wales-tour-of-trails.html

Put me on a bike and I’m happy. Take me to Wales with it and I’m all yours.

I cannot tell you how happy it’s made me to get back to cycling in the last few weeks, especially to get back to the trails. It’s been three months since I broke my collarbone and wrist, and now that I’m back on the bike I feel like me again.

With all bones intact too – bonus!

I’ve been meaning to write about our mountain bike adventures for ages. I’ve touched on it before when talking about how much I love cycling, and the first time we went gorge walking in the Brecon Beacons and <a href="http://www.thefi…

The “All or Nothing” Approach Has Failed, Miserably.

Source http://www.niashanks.com/all-or-nothing-approach/

all or nothing approach has failedAnother myth that’s detrimental to health and fitness is the “all or nothing” mentality: You have to go all in if you want to achieve great results. You do everything correctly, or you might as well not even try. You either stay on that diet and make sure every meal is perfect, or you screwed up because you ate a cupcake and go back to previous habits. All, or nothing.

There are limitless examples of the failure of the all or nothing approach: Remember the teacher who lost 56 pounds eating nothing but McDonald’s for six months? During this experiment guided by a few basics rules (e.g., limit calories to 2,000 per day, track 15 nutrients to meet the standards of the FDA) he managed to lose 56 pounds while lowering his cholesterol and triglycerides (from 249 to 170 and 156 to 80, respectively).

Despite the fact that this man’s health was improved from this experiment (and no he didn’t do it to proclaim eating fast food for every meal is ideal or recommended) many stood up and shouted, “This is wrong!” and “Can you imagine the results he would…

How to Burn More Fat Even When You are Watching TV or On Your Computer

Source http://www.personaltrainingco.com/how-to-burn-more-fat-even-when-you-are-watching-tv/

Most folks don’t know this. But whether you’re man or woman, one of the biggest secrets to burning fat is to build some muscle.

Sounds crazy, I know. But it’s absolutely true. The more muscle you have, the more calories you’ll burn — even while you’re on the couch watching television.

Below are a few easy ways to start building muscle and burning fat like never before.

Build Muscle and Burn Fat From The Comfort Of Your Own Home

If you want that ‘ultimate’ beach body, building a little muscle will help you get there.bigstock-Acrobatic-Business-26502800

There are two main reasons for this:

1. Muscle is what gives you body that lean, sleek, sexy look.

2. The more muscle you have, the more calories — and ultimately body fat — your body will burn.

Now if you’re a woman reading this, I know what you might be thinking … “I don’t want to build muscle and get big and bulky.”

Rest easy. It’s not easy for women to build that degree of muscle. What’s more, buildin…
