The Wonders of CBD

In the active, sometimes anxious population that makes up the majority of my clients, people are always searching for something to take away their pain after a hard workout or calm their over stressed bodies and minds down.  Many of my clients want to avoid pharmaceutical interventions and ask about more natural remedies.  Recently, a “new” substance has been popping up everywhere in the press and on the shelves of stores.  Cannabidiol, CBD, is one of many compounds, known as cannabinoids, that are found in the cannabis plant.  CBD oil can be derived from marijuana and its cousin, hemp.

Until recently, the most well-known compound in cannabis was delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This is the psycho active (mind altering) ingredient in marijuana.  CBD has no psychoactive impact on a person.  It does, however, interact with serotonin and  receptors in the brain, which affect the perception of pain and mood.  In January, the World Anti Doping Agency removed CBD from its list of banned substances, opening the door for its use in recovery from over activity.  Unfortunately, because marijuana is still listed as a Schedule I drug by the Federal Government, research on the benefits of this substance has been slow to accumulate.  Anecdotally,…

Haiku Productivity: The Power of Limits to Increase Our Focus

Source https://zenhabits.net/haiku/

By Leo Babauta

A decade ago, I wrote about “Haiku Productivity” and how limits can make us more productive, more focused, and better able to prioritize and simplify.

The idea comes from haiku poetry, in which the poet is limited to three lines and (essentially) 17 syllables. Such a crazy limit, and yet the poetry that can be produced is often very powerful.

The secret: the poet is forced to choose, forced to simplify, forced to find the essence of the message. The constraints are actually a very powerful thing, because constraints force you to be disciplined, to understand that because you have limits, every element in the container must be important, and you can’t just waste words.

Over the years, I would often lose sight of this wisdom, but I keep coming back to it: when a container is unlimited, you’ll just fill it with anything. When you have constraints, you’ll be more careful, be more appreciative of the limited space you have, and explore what’s important to you in more depth.

This applies to every area of life, including:

  • Productive time: If you have a long list of things to do, and the entire work week to do them, it doesn’t feel that urgent, and you often fill your days with little things — answering emails, messages, group chats, or reading things online. But what if you only had an hour a day, and y…

Do You Need to Take Probiotics? (Science Says it Might Be a Waste)

Source https://www.bornfitness.com/do-i-need-probiotics/

The probiotic industry has a dirty secret: It’s creating a billion-dollar business based on twisted science.

If you are wondering, “do I need probiotics?” Consider this: Probiotics — the healthy bacteria highlighted on most yogurt products — are being added to everything from popcorn to muffin mixes.

According to a report by Grand View Research, the market for probiotics supplements is expected to reach $7 billion in the next 7 years.

Here’s the thing: That business is built on a little bit of science…and a lot of fiction.

“There are many products labeled with the word ‘probiotic’ in the U.S., but not all are responsibly formatted or studied for health benefits,” says Mary Ellen Sanders, Ph.D., executive science officer of the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics. </span…
