Rings on Her Fingers

Source: http://blog.alz.org/rings-on-her-fingers/

My dad and I tried to take Mom’s rings off today, but we had no success. In addition to her wedding and engagement ring, Mom wears four other rings, each one tightly hugging her fingers, so much so that even with liberal amounts of lubrication, the rings do not come off. She’s been wearing them for so long that her fingers have shaped themselves around the rings.

Mom has gained weight and her fingers are bigger than they used to be. She does not have pain in her fingers from her rings; they are not cutting off circulation (yet). But they look like they might.

The problem is that Mom won’t let me or my dad attempt to remove them. If we are to avoid cutting them, we have to be able to work them off each finger a little at a time, which may hurt if not irritate the fingers. I have visions of us putting Mom under local anesthesia in order to avoid a big scene.

Do the rings really need to come off? If the answer is yes, then we can’t let our fear of Mom’s A…

Friday Faves

Source http://www.fannetasticfood.com/friday-faves-6/

Hello my friends! Happy Friday – popping in with some random things I’m loving lately to kick off the weekend. 🙂

1) Warm weather in January! It got up to almost 70 degrees yesterday – what the heck?! It was weird but also amazing. I grabbed lunch at one of my local faves, Yafa, with a friend from my co-working space and it was warm enough to eat outside! I got half rice, half salad with chicken, various veggies, hummus, and a yogurt sauce. So good!

It was still warm this morning so Matt and I decided to go for a quick run before work. I didn’t wear my watch but I’d say we did about 3 miles. Shorts in January = awesome! Felt good to get out there. 🙂

Ring In 'Lemony Snicket' On Netflix With A Series Of Unfortunate Recipes

Pasta puttanesca is perhaps the most well-known dish among Lemony Snicket fans, although Count Olaf would have preferred roast beef.

In the children’s books, food is practically a supporting character. So why not welcome the poor Baudelaire orphans with a delightfully miserable repast while binge-watching the new show?

5 Lessons from a Dating Detox (for Anyone Who’s Looking for Love)

Source http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/tinybuddha/~3/rYrOihNVdUA/

“Sometimes when you lose your way, you find yourself.” ~Mandy Hale

Ever since I can remember, I was determined, even desperate, to find love. My life felt empty and lonely.

I wanted to be happy and feel loved. I believed everything would be all right if only I had my man.

For years my self-esteem was non-existent. I had no clue how to build a relationship with a man. I had no boundaries. I felt unworthy and unlovable.

I started dating online. I kept meeting different men and occasionally I would meet someone who I would see for a while.

Because of my low self-esteem and desperation, I often ended up with men who were not ready to commit or couldn’t give me what I needed.

After a few months I would feel drained and the relationship would come to an end. Again, I would find myself back on the dating scene desperately looking for Mr. Right: flicking through tonnes of profiles, interacting with hundreds of men and meeting a handful of them only to find out that I had nothing in common with most of them. It was frustrating and disheartening.

I was stuck in this cycle for years. A relationship, a breakup, serial dating; a relationship, a breakup, serial dating …

It was an emotional roller coaster: of hopes and disapp…

FDA releases label rules for Added Sugars

Source http://www.foodpolitics.com/2017/01/fda-releases-label-rules-for-added-sugars/

Just in the nick of time, the FDA has released rules on labeling added sugars.  and re-adjusting serving sizes, documents aimed at helping food manufacturers prepare for the sweeping update to Nutrition Facts labels set for 2018.

The FDA also released draft guidance for complying with the rules.  Here is one example from this Q and A:

7. How should I calculate the amount of added sugars in a fruit juice blend containing the juices of multiple fruits that have not been reconstituted to 100 percent (full-strength)?

If the juice blend is reconstituted such that the sugar concentration is less than what would be expected in the same amount of the same type of single strength juice (e.g., less than 100% juice), the added sugar declaration would be zero. If the juice blend is reconstituted such that the sugar concentration is greater than what would be expected in the same amount of the same type of single strength juice, the amount of sugar that is in excess of what would be expected in the same amount of the same type of single strength juice must be declared as added sugars on the label.

Getting to Know Yourself: 5 Ways to Discover Your Joyful True Nature

Source http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/tinybuddha/~3/z6fpzadB-Zo/

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” ~Aristotle

Four years ago I left a corporate career, belongings, a nice home, and family and friends, ejecting myself from the outer world and fiercely diving into an inner journey.

Jumping into the deep end of the pool—an inner terrain I was wildly unfamiliar with, having been very oriented to the outer world—has been quite the adventure.

I wasn’t totally sure what I would be looking for (myself possibly?), but something about the way I had been living my daily life, with angst in the backdrop, told me that this was the right move.

Extreme, and yet right.

Having been steeped in a spiritual practice and inner work these past four years, it is clear to me that one of the biggest purposes this type of journey serves is to help us really meet ourselves. It pushes us to take responsibility for understanding ourselves, our patterns, and habits so they don’t unconsciously run our life and relationships.

Some would call this mindfulness.

With mindfulness—a loving, non-judgmental moment-to-moment awareness—we have a tool to personally mature, become more intimate wit…
