My First Memory of Teamwork: A Former NFL Player Walks to End Alzheimer’s for His Grandfather

I learned about the concept of teamwork from my grandfather when I started playing youth football in 1992. That year our team was awful, both on the offensive and defensive lines; we went winless the entire season. This made me miserable. I was the biggest and fastest kid on the team but wasn’t even playing in a featured position.

My granddad went to every single one of my games, as he lived just five minutes from where we played. One day he gave me life-changing advice: the oldest and wisest. “You guys need to start working as a team. If the opposing team has the ball, swarm the carrier as one unit!” He saw what needed to be done, and that advice changed the course of my life.

Granddad passed away of complications from Alzheimer’s last year, on my 32nd birthday…

Your Workouts Really Don’t Need to be That Long

You may be spending way too much time trying to get fit. It’s not that fitness isn’t worthwhile. Obviously, it is. The problem is, your strategy might not be the most efficient, anatomically speaking, and so you may be working out for much longer than needed and getting a fraction of the results that you desire.

These days, the universal fitness strategy is based on looking fit, which means it all comes down to appearance. If you’re lean, taut, muscular, etc., you’re perceived as being in shape though, in reality, you may not be. Scientifically, we know the real key to fitness is the following formula, in order of importance: nutrition, hydration, and activity. What you eat and drink really does affect how you look more than what you do. How you work out impacts what you eat and how much you drink.

When most people exercise, they are not utilizing a full range of motion. In other words, you may not be compelling your load-bearing joints (shoulders, hips, knees and ankles) to move in all directions. When you go for a run, walk, or bike ride, your hips move in only one direction (forward), while your shoulders generally don’t move at all. At the gym, you may do an array of exercises and a multitude of reps, but how often do you lift your arms above your head or rotate your torso in either direction or move your body sideways?

When I last left off, it was Saturday and Matt and I were enjoying a dip in the pool at our inn. As I shared in the last post, we were staying at a lovely place called Glen Gordon Manor; I heard their food was fabulous and that it was worth doing their fancy dinner one of the nights we were there – it was expensive but we decided to splurge! I rocked a hand-me-down Old Navy maternity dress for the occasion – in tight clothing the bump is getting quite intense!

How Exercising in Bed Actually Made Me Want to Work Out More

I’m never more ambitious than I am the night before I plan to work out. I dust off my sneakers; Google “how to put a sports bra on”; set my alarm for 6 a.m.; and fall asleep to visions of myself doing deadlifts, joyfully running outside, and casually popping into a CrossFit box to teach a class. NBD.

But I’m never less ambitious than when my alarm goes off the next morning. I go from thinking, If I wake up every day at 4 a.m. and train really hard, I could totally pull off a triathlon, to Has it always been this hard to lean down and put socks on my feet?

And suddenly all my bold plans go out the window, and I instead lie in bed convincing myself that tomorrow’s actually a much better day to workout. Yes, tomorrow. Because it’ll be one degree cooler, or Mercury won’t be in retrograde, or that it’s much better for my aura to lie still for an hour and scroll through my frenemies’ Insta-stories because I’ve had a long week.

“If only I could exercise in bed,” I’d frequently say to my ceiling fan, “I’d be the fittest person in the world.”

Well, a few weeks ago, “if only…” turned into a reality when I learned about Wakeout—an app that felt like it was designed just for me. (Yet, according to its website, that is not the case.) Each day, it runs you through a short series of three easy exercises that you can do from your bed and …

Some of the world’s best cacao grows in Venezuela, a country roiled by political turmoil. One chocolatier is betting those beans can propel a whole industry and turn women into micro-entrepreneurs.
